Brilliant dad feature. Week 20

July 10, 2015
My name is Martin and I’m a full-time dad from the sunny south of England. Back in 2011 I gave up my job as a retail support manager to become a full-time Dad to my two boys, who at the time were 2 1/2 and six months old.

After working all my life and being forty at the time, I have to admit, it was a bit of a shock to the system. But now, four years later, my wife and I often agree that it was the best option. Sure, we struggle at times but we just put our heads together and work through it between us.

With my little one starting school in September, I am hoping to have more time to concentrate on a blog I have just started – At Home With The Boys. Sharing my experiences, the laughter and the pain, to new and established parents. It’s nothing new I know, but it’s a great way of recording and documenting my life with my family.
1. Have you always wanted to be a dad?
To be honest, it’s not really something I thought about until after I got married. It was only then that I thought I was ready for the challenges of Fatherhood (ha-ha, little did I know).

2. How did you feel when your children were born?
Believe it or not, very emotional. Here I was with a little man in my hands, knowing that I’m going to be responsible for his young life. By the time our second child came along, I was a little more relaxed but still very emotional. It’s just something you can’t describe until you go through it yourself.
3. What have been the most rewarding experiences been so far?
Every day is a unique and rewarding experience! My childhood was one that has more memories I wish to forget than those I look back at and smile. Providing my boys with days and times they will cherish is important, therefore making each and every day rewarding experience

4. What are some of funniest moments to have happened to you as a dad?

Kids come out with the funniest of things all the time. But the one thing that sticks in my mind is when I had just given my eldest (three at the time) a little talking to about sharing toys with his brother. After our little chat, he went back to picking his nose, looked at the contents on the end of his finger, moved it my direction and said ‘share? Needless to say, I had to decline.
5. Have there been any situations with your children that you found difficult to cope with?
Discipline is a very tough area and often find it hard to cope with, especially when my eldest was going through the terrible two’s. After a bit of research on Google, we discovered the ‘naughty step’ and now that they are a bit older, they both have more toys to take away until their behaviour improves. It must be something every parent dreads.

6. What are your dreams and hopes for your children
I have a bouncy castle business and since running this, it has opened my eyes to see how different life is for other families, in particular, those that are constantly running fundraising events for their children.
I used to have dreams and ambitions for them when they were first born but now I’m just so grateful that they are healthy and don’t have to endure the treatment I have seen other children go through.
So long as I guide them to what is right and wrong, that they maintain their health, and appreciate the true meaning of life, then I will be happy for them.

Thank you to Martin for taking part in the Brilliant Dad Feature.
