Home Essentials for Anyone Interested in DIY

When you read DIY blogs, there’s a whole wealth of information at your feet. But many assume that you already know the basics. This can make things difficult for beginners who are just  starting out and testing the waters of home improvement. Everyone has to start somewhere and there’s not much out there for the absolute beginner. But not to worry. If you’re a DIY novice, we’re here to help. Let’s start with the basic equipment that you’ll need to start out on your journey to fitting your own shelves and repairing little faults about the house. Here’s a quick run through of the absolute essentials.

Basic Toolbox

A basic toolbox lies at the core of your DIY efforts. So make sure you have a big one and it’s well stocked. Try to find a toolbox with well separated compartments. It’s easy for your bits and bobs to become massively unorganised which will just prove irritating when it comes down to trying to find what you need. Ensure that you have a hammer, nails, screws and allan keys.

Measuring Equipment

You want anything you create to be even and have good angles for a start. Afterall, a wonky shelf is no use to anybody, as items will constantly slip off it. So make sure you have the necessary items to ensure this. This includes tape measures and rulers that allow you to align things evenly. A spirit level would be ideal (if you’re unfamiliar with this term, it’s the ruler with an air bubble in some liquid) as this gives me the most accurate measurements.

Electric Drills

When you start carrying out work on your home, you’ll soon come to realise that the trusty handheld screwdriver is only useful for so much. While we don’t want to knock the screwdriver (it’s great for all sorts of smaller tasks), it can prove insufficient on many levels. Sometimes using one will only make life harder for yourself. So invest in an electric drill. We’d advise looking for the best cordless drill you can find. Cordless drills give you much more freedom of movement and you’re less likely to get tangled in wires which can cause mistakes or accidents that are best avoided. Just remember to fully charge them up before use. Otherwise you’ll find yourself having to stop and start on your work which is inconvenient.

First Aid Kit

Most people don’t bear this in mind when stocking up for their DIY kit. But make sure that there is an accompanying first aid kit close at hand. This should contain antiseptic wipes, plasters, bandages and bandage tape. You will be glad that you thought ahead if needs arise.

Important Things to Remember

Make sure that all of your tools and equipment are stored away safely. They should be well out of the reach of children and pets to avoid accidents and injuries. Consider investing in a shed in the garden, so that they can be locked away outside of your home space.
