5 hobbies that can help to improve your mental health

April 26, 2022

Many of us are affected by mental health issues every day, and sometimes it can feel like an uphill struggle, but there are things you can do to make it all a little easier

One of those is to find a hobby that interests you. Having something to focus on and enjoy can do wonders for your frame of mind, so if you don’t already have one, it might be time to consider your options.

Here are 5 hobbies that can help to improve your mental health.

Running

Running is one of the best exercises you can do if you have mental health issues. So much so that many doctors are now recommending it to their patients. If you aren’t sure where to start, one of the best ways is to download an interval training running app for beginners, such as Couch to 5k

Interval training techniques promote increased stamina and good recovery, and within as little as 9 weeks, you should be able to run 5k and, in turn, notice positive changes in terms of your mental health.

Fishing

As well as being relaxing, fishing can also help reduce stress, boost your mood, and even increase your self-esteem, so if you have never tried it, it might be worth a shot. You will need some basic equipment to start with, such as a rod and reel, fishing line, hooks, and tackle, and – while not essential from the outset – there are various Scotty electric downriggers available to suit a range of abilities.

It may also be worth finding out if there are any fishing clubs in your area which provides a great way of meeting new people.

Reading

When you suffer from mental health issues, it can be hard to focus on other things or detach from your thoughts. If this sounds familiar, you may find that reading can help. It’s a great way to relax and escape from day-to-day stresses. So, if you haven’t read a book in a long time, why not join your local library, visit your local bookshop or download a few of the many millions of eBooks available these days.

If you don’t like the idea of reading, audiobooks are another great option.

Colouring books

You may think that colouring books are for kids, but you couldn’t be more wrong. Adult colouring has become hugely popular over the last few years and is readily available in different formats. From traditional paperback books to downloadable apps, you shouldn’t have trouble finding something that takes your fancy.

Writing

If you are reasonably creative, you may find that writing is a great outlet and helps you massively with your thoughts. It may be that you have a penchant for poetry, or perhaps you fancy doing a bit of creative writing now and again. The sooner you start putting pen to paper, the sooner you will know whether you have a flair for it or not.

Writing can be hugely therapeutic and is a great way to pass the time when things feel like they are getting on top of you.
