5 Steps Parents Should Take to Protect Their Kids as Businesses Reopen

July 1, 2020

America is going through a strange time. Parts of the country, like New York State, are seeing fewer Covid-19 cases. That is because the state has generally been good about wearing masks and social distancing.

At the same time, states such as Florida and Arizona face enormous new case numbers. This is mostly due to bars and restaurants being open, and people refusing to wear masks and socially distance themselves. The issue has become politicised, and it seems as though many individuals aren’t sure who to trust.

As businesses of all kinds reopen, parents should be very careful about protecting themselves and their children. If you have an immunocompromised child, there is nothing more vital.

Here are five steps to protect your kids in today’s climate.

It’s All About the Facemasks

Major cities are reopening slowly after coronavirus, even as scientists say that we haven’t reached a peak yet. Many states elect to use different criteria as to when it’s safe to open. Some strongly urge facemask usage, while others require it if you’re going to go into business establishments.

All medical logic, though, indicates that masks will protect your children. Masks can:

  • Keep your kids from contracting the virus
  • Keep them from passing it to others if they have it but are asymptomatic

It’s a very small, easy step to take. Make sure that you talk to your kids about why they have to do this, and be positive that they understand its importance. They need to know how to wear masks that completely cover both their nose and mouth.

Socially Distance

The other simple, easy step that you can take is to practice social distancing if you take your kids into a store with you. One way that you can do that is to pay attention to signs or tape that some establishments have put on the floor. That marks how you can stay six feet away from the individual or shopping cart in front of you.

If your kids are young enough that they don’t completely understand what’s going on, you can try to make a game of it. You can also have the older ones watch the younger ones if you have a large family.

Go Out with Your Spouse or Partner

If you co-parent with someone, then another way to protect your kids is to go out as a family if you go to the store or another open establishment. That’s not always possible, due to jobs and scheduling issues. Whenever you can, though, go out as a group.

Your spouse, partner or significant other can help you mind the kids if you go to:

  • The grocery store
  • The hardware store
  • The pet store
  • A bank
  • Anywhere else that’s open

They can help watch over the kids and make sure that they’re practicing social distancing and keeping their masks on. Two watching over your young ones is better than one.

Keep Them Home When You Can

You can also try to keep the kids home as much as possible. If you have young ones, they’re probably bored at this point, and it’s hard to keep them entertained.

However, this is an unprecedented time, and lives are at stake. If your child has the coronavirus but shows no symptoms, then they could pass it on to someone if you go out with them. Maybe they’ll pass it along to an older adult who might then die from it.

It’s not alarmist to say such things when 125,000 people in this country have died so far. If you don’t absolutely need to take your children to the store with you, then don’t do it.

Leave Them with a Babysitter

If you need to go to a reopened store for supplies, you can also leave the kids home with a babysitter. That might be your spouse, partner, or co-parent, or maybe it’s a neighbour with whom you have a good relationship.

Perhaps a relative who lives near you could handle watching the kids for a couple of hours. Again, the idea is to keep them away from the public so that they’re not at risk.

Understandably, people feel boredom now that the summer is here, and they’ve been house-bound for months. We need to stay safe, though, and kids are a vulnerable population segment that you need to watch over.

Follow these tips and keep your little ones out of danger, not to mention everyone else.
