8 Ways To Put Late-Night Food Cravings Under Control

December 19, 2023

Many people succumb to their late-night cravings and start to chow down on snacks until they feel full again. But that’s a fast way to gain weight, and no one wants to put on unnecessary pounds when they can help it. In order to combat this, here are eight great ways to keep your cravings under control at night.

1. Eat Regularly

If you’re asking yourself “why am I always hungry at night?” it be because you’re not eating meals at the same time every day. Eating regular meals will put your metabolism into a specific rhythm so that it knows when you’re hungry and will prepare your body for food at those times.

2. Pre-Plan Your Snack

If you do have to snack late, prepare something that is healthy. If you have a sweet craving, plan a snack like fruit. If it’s salt you’re craving, then you could measure out some trail mix into a small container so that you’re not constantly shoving your hand into a bag.

3. Portion Out Your Snack

Don’t keep the container next to you while you’re snacking. Pour out a specific amount into a separate bowl and put the container away to resist the temptation. This will stop you from eating more than you should.

4. Snack Without Distractions

Don’t enjoy your snack while you’re busy doing something else. You’ll get distracted and won’t keep tabs on how much you’re eating. You’ll start snacking until your distraction is done, allowing you to eat more food than you originally wanted.

5. Change Your Nightly Routine

If you tend to eat a snack while you’re watching TV at night, it might be time to engage in a different activity. Read a book while sipping tea or do some yoga. It will take some time to retrain your brain, but it can definitely help to stop your night cravings.

6. Keep A Food Diary

If you can keep track of how much food you’re eating throughout the day, you’ll have a better idea of what your caloric intake is. You can pinpoint the parts of your daily food intake that can be cut out entirely.

7. Get Good Quality Sleep

Focus on getting a solid night of sleep in order to cut back on your late-night snacking. Relax in bed instead of standing in the kitchen with a bag of pretzels.

8. Stay Consistent

It can be easy to backslide if you’re not seeing immediate results. You have to determine what works best for you using trial and error. Not every plan is going to work for everyone, so you’ll have to try some of everything in order to create a plan that works for you.

It can be easy to make simple changes to your routine and cut back on your late-night eating, but if you think that it may be the result of anxiety or depression, it’s important that you speak to your primary healthcare provider to get you the help you need. They may be able to rule out any possible medical causes there might be for your nighttime snacking.
