When you are a parent I have always found that one of the most exciting parts is watching your children and how they are like sponges and open to trying anything new. In particular, I love watching them explore their musical talents and trying out different musical instruments.

My ten year old twin girls have always loved music and learning different instruments from early on. They had recorder lessons in school which moved along to guitar and piano/ keyboards. It really is very exciting watching them develop and then play a tune and the look of pride on their faces just melts your heart.

So when I was recently approached by BlackStar to review and try out their Carry-On instruments, I instantly thought this was a perfect opportunity for the girls to improve their musical talents.

BlackStar sent me a Carry-on guitar, Carry-on digital wind instrument and two Carry-on folding pianos, one with 88 keys and the other with 49 keys.

My children’s and my initial thoughts when we opened the instruments was that these are absolutely fab. They’re brilliant quality and the girls couldn’t wait to start playing them and that’s exactly what they did. They were incredibly easy to set up. All you had to do was turn them on. The girls were able to play tunes almost instantly and the sound was fab!

1. BlackStar Carry-on Folding Piano 88 Touch RRP £89.99

The carry-on full length folding piano is perfect for beginners, kids, students and even professionals. So if you are looking to learn piano this is just what you need.

It’s lightweight at just 1.6kg and when it’s folded, it’s only 33cm in length which makes it perfect to be transported anywhere. When unfolded it measures 52 inches.

When folded out it is an 88 key full length folding digital piano. When fully charged it will give you 8 hours of battery life and is rechargeable via a USB connection.

The carry-on folding piano has stereo speakers, transpose function, polyphonic, midi over USB, metronome, headphone out, tempo control and a sustain pedal plus 128 sounds and rhythms.

The carry-on piano has full size keys, a very realistic feel and a soft touch keyboard design. It has a multiple digital interface which includes 6 metronome settings and 30 demo songs for a wide practice range of accompaniments.

You will also find included a sustain pedal, tote bag and piano note stickers giving you a very full learning and performing experience.

My thoughts

The carry-on piano really is perfect for kids and my 10 year old twin girls loved playing it and experimenting with different sounds. 2. BlackStar Carry-on Folding Piano 49 Touch RRP £99.99

BlackStar also have a carry-on 49 key folding piano. It is exactly as the details as above, except it is 1.01kg in weight and folds up to 39cm and of course it only has 49 keys.

My Thoughts

I thought this particular one is good for smaller children who are just starting to learn piano. Its size makes it much easier for them to use.

3. BlackStar Carry-on Digital Wind Instrument RRP £79.99

I’m sure most of us at some point, when we were in school, started to learn the recorder. Well the carry-on digital wind instrument takes playing a recorder to a completely different level.

It is just like a traditional wind instrument and a very practical solution for silent practice via headphones. It gives access to a huge amount of different sound possibilities and features 10 built in voices which can be heard either via the speaker or headphones.

The carry-on digital wind instrument has a choice of two fingerings, a transpose function, 3 levels of breath sensitivity and a washable silicone mouthpiece, as well as a midi bluetooth feature.

The instrument voices include tenor, alto, soprano saxophone to name a few and be used on all platforms including IOS, Android, PC and MAC.

It comes with a carry bag and is small enough to fit in school bags or rucksacks. When fully charged it will give 3 hours of playing time so it really can be played anywhere.

My thoughts

My twin girls thought the carry-on digital wind instrument was brilliant and loved the fact that they could create so many different sounds. It was a massive hit with them. 4. BlackStar Carry-on Mini Vintage Jet Black Electric Guitar RRP £149.99

If you’re looking for a perfect first guitar for your child then the carry-on electric mini guitar is the one for you. It’s a portable travel sized guitar that plays and feels just like a full-sized instrument.

It weighs just 1.9kg and is 77cm long which is perfect for travel and it will fit in airline overheads which makes it perfect for learning and taking with you on your journeys.

The mini guitar is constructed using a single piece popular bodies with a bolt-on maple neck. The mini guitar is beautiful and looks and gives awesome playability.

The mini guitar has a mini humbucker pick-up with sealed tuners, a 19 fret laurel fingerboard, volume and tone controls plus a TOM style bridge which all means it gives one awesome sound and is perfect if you are learning or if you already play guitar. My thoughts
