[AD] Exploring Moral Values with Your Kids

Teaching your child moral values from a young age will help them grow up to be a kind, hard-working, respectable individual. Little people don’t always understand rules or appropriate ways to behave and its important for you, as parents, to point them in the right direction. I have teamed up with an independent school in Banstead to give you some advice on where to begin.

There are numerous different morals that you should explore with your child and many of them will come naturally. For instance, it goes without saying that parents should teach their kids good manners; saying please, thank you and sorry where appropriate. They need to know to respect other people, regardless of their age, gender, religious views etc. Explain to them that all people are equal and should be treated as such. It might help to offer them examples of both respectful and disrespectful behaviour. 

Your child also needs to know the importance of sharing. When they have a playdate, they should let their friend play with their toys. Let your child know that if they are kind and generous with their belongings, other people will be the same with them. 

This brings us onto stealing. Although your child might have learnt to be generous and share their own things, they should never take something that belongs to someone else if they don’t have permission. Young children can’t comprehend that not everything is theirs, so you might think that the no stealing rule is pretty obvious, but it actually isn’t to a little person.

Other important values are organisation and good time keeping. If your child is punctual to lessons and finishes their homework on time, they are far more likely to perform well in school. Generally speaking, it’s a good idea to encourage your child to have a positive attitude towards learning.

Of course, your child will struggle to grasp any of these morals if they don’t see the same behaviour demonstrated by their parents and other influential people around them. With that in mind, always try and be a good role model, showing your child appropriate ways to behave. For instance, show them how to have a healthy conversation by listening respectfully, not interrupting and remembering your manners. What’s more, try to have an optimistic outlook, using positive language when it comes to talking about things like school. Eventually, you will see similar behaviour reflected in your youngster.
