Blogging And The Use of Social Media

March 31, 2017

I have been blogging for about two and a half years now and it’s always fascinated me the opinions of bloggers on how the use or abuse of social media should be used in relation to your blog.

There are of course many reasons people blog. Some to make money, others to chronicle their children’s and family lives and undoubtedly some people just love to write and record their ramblings. I’m pretty sure I fall into all three of those categories, but ultimately I write because I love it and it’s my record for my children when I’m long gone.

Of course when I do write something I like to think people are reading it, but I’m not arrogant enough to think people will read it without me promoting my posts. The fact that I do paid work also means I need to promote those posts and the reason is simple. I feel it’s only fair and right that somebody has paid me therefore the very least I can do is get it maximum exposure and hopefully get whichever brand I’m working with will be promoted a bit more.

For me this is where social media has a use that is unparalleled you can promote it to within an inch of its life and does it matter. For example, on Twitter a tweet is gone in about 15 minutes. A very small window of opportunity to get your latest post out so, yes I tweet the same post four or five times. I would like to have it read and Facebook is the same. I use it to promote my posts. All of us, if we are honest write a post and would like it read, not just sit on our blogs with three views and no comments.

We all want our writing to get a reaction whether that is good, bad or indifferent, any reaction, but obviously good would be nice.

Of course social media is very good at conversation and communication and can be loads of fun to chat with friends, family and fellow bloggers.

But it is also a workhorse for bloggers and there is no reason that it can’t be both. There is room on social media for whatever we deem fit to use it for.

Blogging today is a serious money making machine. It’s an industry that is standing alone and growing beyond most people’s expectations and imaginations, and as a blogger that would like to earn money from my blog I use all and every type of promotional tool available which of course includes social media.

PR companies want a return on their investment and why shouldn’t they. They have to justify the expense to the brand and that’s simply how business works, and blogging once money is involved is a business. Tweeting a paid post four or five times, is it really any different from having numerous billboards all over the city or the same advert in numerous newspapers? In my opinion it’s not.

Using social media to promote your blog or particular paid blog posts should not be look down upon. It’s simply fulfilling your obligations to the PR. And of course we would all like those views. I do.

Would love to know your thoughts.

Good post. I think social media is a necessary tool to promote a blog. Especially when you are starting out. I pound my blog on all social media sites!

Twitter, above all others has been invaluable for me in driving traffic to the blog. I also find that it is the best for having conversations with other people that I never would have talked to otherwise. I see no problem with posting multiple links to your blog, and I never get offended by people I follow posting links to their sponsored posts. It doesn’t take a second to scroll past something you’re not interested in, after all.
The only times I become frustrated is when there is no apparent interaction with other people. I tend to unfollow when all I get from someone is a constant stream of self-promotion on a daily basis, yet no response when I try to talk to them.
    Promote away, I say!

My blog was basically an unread site until I started using Twitter. I love connecting and reading what people promote and I’m with you, it shouldn’t be looked down upon because we’re all just trying to make it. #ThatFridayLinky

Hi, there is nothing wrong with plugging a blog on social media. It’s a great way to drive visitors to view your posts. I need to get better at this though, Chloe #ThatFridayLinky

Totally acceptable to promote your blog, I do it too. The problem I find is that it’s difficult to have to repeat it so many times to get bigger traction on Twitter. But I’ve not yet seen a tweeted blog post ‘too many times’ on my feed. As you say, then only last a short time so people are likely to see only one anyway. #ThatFridayLinky

I think it is necessary, but I loath all the automation these days. It takes me hours to scroll though Twitter to actual conversations because of the constant stream of scheduled posts. I understand that to get our posts out there we need to keep sharing them, but it just feels like the audience has such a short attention span that it’s nigh impossible to actually build that audience in the first place! We get so battered about with information these days. #ThatFridayLinky

I feel they go hand in hand really. If I wanted a personal diary, I wouldn’t publish it online. i want my posts to be read, enjoyed, educate, answer my questions and most importantly connect with others. Its a big old internet, and no one will just stumble across my blog. I put more hours into social media that actually blogging at the moment (I would prefer it the other way round but I have just started out). Thanks for an interesting read #thatfridaylinky

I manually share my blog posts on Twitter and Facebook, I haven’t got any other social media. Interestingly even though I have more than 5 times as many followers on Twitter than on Facebook I get probably 5 times as much traffic from Facebook, but I get more reaction from Twitter. Social media is definitely a useful tool for sharing blogs though, but isn’t that precisely what it is for, sharing media socially? #thatfridaylinky

I only write for myself although I have done a few reviews in the past. I would promote all my blog posts in exactly the same way. I think it’s a completely acceptable thing to do! #ThatFridayLinky

100% agree! Get it whacked out there. I see people getting so angry over seeing repeated posts etc, it doesn’t bother me one bit.

Promotion is a huge part of blogging and people need to accept that whether they like it or not.

    I’m sharing this twice 🤣👍

Totally agree. I went for a coffee with Sarah (Run Jump Scrap) yesterday and we were discussing the whole “what’s the point” of blogging and agreed it needs to be worthwhile and of course if you’re getting something in return you have to promote. Thanks for hosting as always #thatfridaylinky

I completely agree, you have to use social media to drive traffic to your blog. I do become frustrated when I see blogs that are no longer relevant still be tweeted, for example Christmas posts still coming out now.
I would be interested to know what scheduler you use on Twitter. It is something that I don’t use at the moment but am about to start looking into. #ThatFridayLinky

It’s very simple: if you don’t like my approach to social media, don’t follow me! Each tweet, I believe, potentially reaches 2% of your readership. You have, in fact, got to really go for it to appear spammy. Sure, some people do auto-tweet too much and promote their posts too much (I have known people do it hourly). Unless someone is really going over the top, I just let it slide, as we all should. If someone is making money, good for them. In my case I’m not buying holiday homes in Orlando, I’m paying for piano lessons / school uniform etc. It’s just what I do!

I’m with you all the way on this one. Posts on Twitter in particular has a very short life and I think it’s perfectly acceptable to promote a blog post etc several times a day. I think the problem comes when that is all that a person sends out with no other posts inbetween. Then it just looks like one giant advertising stream.
Interesting post. (and one I expect you to be sharing alot lol)

I fell there is nothing wrong with promoting what you write. Every brand, artist, writer etc promotes their work on multiple platforms and us as bloggers should do the same. Great write up!

I am making a real effort with social media but some just aren’t taking off as well as others. I am just staring to work with brands and want them to know I will do the best job I can but my stats aren’t backing that up yet. Repeated posts/tweets is essential! #thatfridaylinky

I don’t have a problem with social media or bloggers repeatedly posting their own material. But buying followers is cheating in my opinion.

A word of warning, I lost my Facebook account, as in that I had it taken away, because, apparently I was over promoting my blog, however, Twitter don’t have these strange rules!

I don’t know that anybody besides maybe my dad and wife would read my blog if I stopped promoting it. Even good friends of mine find out when a new post is live when they see it on FB. Very few people have subscribed for e-mail notices

I so have a love/hate relationship with it. Love the interaction and yes it does help get the views for me and the brands but it takes up so much time! Like Jeremy above…I think without it the blog would flop! xx Thanks for hosting x

Yep it seems the Blogging world and Social Media are inextricably linked.

I’ve no problem with people promoting posts and auto tweeting links.

As a previous commenter said the ones who just promote with no interaction are a pain but it’s easy to mute or unfollow.

I really should do it more but it bores me scheduling tweet after tweet and I forget to tweet posts even though I’m on twitter most of the day.

Great post mate, thanks for hosting

I have no problem with promoting posts but I only use twitter and StumbleUpon. My fb page needs some love and attention. I definitely agree if I’m being paid to write I should help promote it, I just wish brands would help with a RT!

To me, the two go hand in hand. I feel my blog would be pointless if I didn’t use Twitter, especially. It get’s your links out there to so many people. I don’t worry about using the same post several times, because like you say, a tweet lasts all of a few minutes, so the chances of someone seeing it more than once is very slim. Great post. #thatfridaylinky

I totally agree! Without social media I don’t think I would have any engagement on my blog, people are far too busy with their every day lives to be checking the blog for updates! Most of my traffic comes from facebook and Instagram, I know some of my friends have no clue how to find my blog without going through facebook! Thank god for social media I say! #thatfridaylinky

I think social media is key for traffic to go to your blog. Striking up friendships with people along the way is an added bonus for me. there are a few fellow bloggers that i speak to on a nearly daily basis and i love how as mates we know that promotion is key so have no qualms about sharing a post or two of their to help them out.
Blogging has evolved over time as has the internet and I think we all need to get on board with the new and ever changing ways. Its all for a good cause and especially for those wanting to monetise their blog, I think social media is a definite requirement. #thatfridaylinky

I’m with you! I promote all my posts, including sponsored ones and I also share my affiliate link. It’s necessary, but I do wonder if people dislike it. I only work with brands that I genuinely have an interest in, or want to write about what they’d like me to though. I think it’s important to be genuine and promoting your posts isn’t a problem. (I hope this makes sense, I’ve got a splitting headache and LO is shouting while hubby changes her nappy which really isn’t helping!) #ThatFridayLinky

I agree mate, companies want and need a return for their investment. It’s a transaction after all. However, as you point out, it also the place to get our interaction and engagement. It’s a fine balancing act.
