Different types of measuring calipers and their uses

Calipers are mechanical tools used for measuring objects and are often found in engineering industries. There are different types of calipers which can be used for a variety of applications on items which can’t be measured using traditional methods such as rulers. Calipers can be fixed or moveable and the one you choose depends on the use. As a control method, fixed calipers make sure each object is the same size. Moveable calipers, however, can be used across many items. 

Calipers can measure four dimensions of any object – the inside, outside, depth and step. Different sized jaws and blades on the tool are used for each one. 

We’ll explain the most common types of calipers and the reasons you might choose to use them. 

Digital calipers

These use modern technology in the form of a PCB unit to accurately read measurements. The calculations are done through the microprocessor and can be read on the digital display. The main advantage to this type of caliper is the ease of use and reliable technology. They are, however, usually more expensive than other types of calipers. 

These tools are ideal for DIY projects such as woodwork tasks, but they’re also widely used across professional industries due to their precision. 

Vernier calipers

Although these lack the digital element, vernier calipers are also extremely accurate and contain measuring jaws for internal and external measurements as well as depth measuring capabilities. Their accuracy means they can measure up to 0.1mm. 

Many industries use these types of calipers including the steel industry, science laboratories and any industry which manufactures components. 

Dial calipers

These calipers use a dial display to show the measurement with a needle to indicate the reading. Using a rack and pinion system alongside internal gears, they have either a metric or imperial measurement reading but not normally both. This can be a downside if you’re wanting to convert one to the other. 

Seen in workplaces such as the automotive and machine industries, dial calipers can also be used in domestic applications for easy measuring.

Micrometer

These mechanical tools can measure very small distances and have reliable precision to an accuracy of 0.1mm. Because of this, they’re especially useful in mechanical engineering for measuring the depth, length and thickness of objects such as small components. They are perhaps the most precise caliper on the market but are normally used for the smallest of items. 

The type of caliper you choose depends on the size of task you are completing and the one that you feel most comfortable using. Many professionals and DIY project enthusiasts find it useful to have more than one type in their tool kit.
