Five Ways To Help Encourage Creative Play In Your Kids

If you have children, then you’ll know just how much they love to play. But this playtime is about more than keeping them entertained – it actually helps them learn some of life’s big lessons.  

Creative play, in particular, is vital for a child’s development. It sets them up with skills they’ll use for the rest of their lives, including problem-solving, decision-making and collaboration. 

We’ve compiled five fun ways to encourage creative play in your kids. These ideas are great for the whole family, so connect with your inner child and join in for endless hours of fun!

Choose open-ended toys 

To help your kids get the most out of their playtime, make sure they’re playing with open-ended toys that encourage development.

You may be asking, “What are open-ended toys”?

Open-ended toys are great for fostering creativity as they can be used in a variety of ways, only limited by a child’s imagination! They help children build important cognitive skills, such as problem solving, and can entertain kids for hours on end. 

Close-ended toys, for contrast, are anything that have a clear ending point, like puzzles and books – there isn’t much to do with them outside of their primary use. Crayons and dolls, on the other hand, are open-ended toys, as they facilitate endless creativity. 

If you’re on the hunt for good open-ended toys, invest in some building blocks, a playhouse or even a Lego set. They also mix well with other toys. Your kiddo might look at building a Lego castle for their favourite doll, or a building block city for their favourite animal figurine to rule. With a range of accessories for their favourite figurines or dolls, the options are limitless.

The best part about open-ended toys is that adults can enjoy them, too. So get together as a family and build some Lego.

Get crafty!

There’s nothing more creative than arts and crafts. Armed with a paintbrush or pack of crayons, your little one can create anything they like! It’s as easy as setting up some easels, laying out art supplies, and letting your children’s imaginations run free.

Make sure you’re giving your kids lots of fun and interesting materials to experiment with, as this will encourage creativity. Whilst paint and felt tips are perfectly fine, don’t be afraid to branch out with unconventional items. Give them old newspapers and magazines to make collages from, or collect some leaves from the garden and use them as your canvas. Gathering a range of materials will encourage your kids to push their boundaries.

When it comes to art, it’s important to let your kids have a lot of freedom. Set up your art station outside, or in a place where they’re able to make a mess. This will encourage your kids to let go and explore, which is exactly what art is intended for. 

Take your play outdoors

Sometimes, all it takes to get creative is a trip out into the fresh air. It’s amazing what games and adventures your kids can come up with when you let them run free at the park, beach or even in the garden at home. 

Once they’re reduced to playing with the things around them, they’ll come up with inventive ways to entertain themselves. Whether it’s making sandcastles, building houses out of sticks, or collecting unique rocks and stones, the possibilities for outdoor play are endless. Plus, it’s a great way for them to burn off that extra energy!

Play pretend

Roleplaying is another great way to spark creativity, as it encourages kids to use their imaginations and be someone else for the day. 

Find some fabulous costumes and get into character next playtime. It might even be something that us adults find a chore – like doing the shopping or running to the bank. Other times your kids might want a little more adventure. Think monsters, dragons and superheroes – whatever captures their imagination! 

Dressing up is also a great activity to do with friends, so invite some people over for a play date, and let your children be creative.

Open your children up to new experiences

Most importantly, encouraging your children to try new things is one of the best ways to facilitate creative play. 

This can be as simple as doing a family activity you’ve never done before. Maybe it’s a new walking track they haven’t explored yet, or a playground they’re yet to test out! The more experiences your children have, the more open-minded they’ll be. 

You could even try and play a new game, or encourage them to try out a new hobby. Each experience they have will also teach them something new, allowing them to gain valuable life skills.
