Hotel vs. Vacation Rental: Which Is Right for You?

February 17, 2022

When you’re planning a trip, particularly one for a family, you want the perfect accommodations. There are plenty of choices available in most locations. For example, you might opt for a hotel, which gives you amenities and convenience.

Another option is a vacation rental property, like an entire cabin or house, or perhaps a rental such as these Deer Park apartments for rent or a condo.

Which is right for you—a hotel or a vacation rental? We compare the two below.

An Overview of Hotels

A hotel is a managed establishment with overnight accommodations for guests. Hotels are for short-term stays most often. The features and services vary quite a bit between locations and hotel brands.

Many hotels will cater to particular types of travellers. For example, some are geared toward business travellers, and others toward families. There are also budget hotels all the way up to high-end luxury locations.

The hotel industry is part of the service industry as well as the tourism industry.

Hotels might offer a variety of services, including towels and linens, housekeeping, and sometimes added features like free breakfast. The rooms in a hotel are private, and they have en suite bathrooms.

Some hotels have larger suites with living and dining rooms, or you can book adjoining rooms if you have a bigger family.

Hotels are different from motels because you typically walk in through a lobby. Motels have access from the parking lot and are usually only one or two levels.

Some hotels are chains, meaning there are many of branded locations across the country or the world. Others are boutique or independent hotels.

Many hotels are very centrally located and, depending on where you’re going, may be walkable.

What is a Vacation Rental?

A vacation rental can be a broad term. You can rent something like a house, villa, or condo through a traditional rental company. In these situations, you aren’t dealing directly with the owner. Instead, you’re working with a representative of the rental company.

You can also rent a property directly through the owner using a platform like Airbnb or VRBO.

Vacation rentals may be centrally located in tourist areas, but they don’t have to be.

Some people prefer rentals that aren’t in a touristy area because they feel like it gives them a more authentic perspective when they travel.

What Are the Pros and Cons of a Hotel?

If you’re thinking of booking a hotel for your trip, the pros of this type of accommodation include:

  • Hotels make things easy for you when you’re traveling. If you have a question or request, you can simply call the front desk, and they can bring you what you need or help you. If you want to book tickets to a show or figure out more information about your location, the hotel can help you as well.
  • There are onsite amenities at most hotels. There may be workspaces, restaurants and dining options, small stores with conveniences you might need, and many also have pools and workout rooms.
  • Housekeeping is included daily at most hotels. This will include taking out your trash, tidying your room, and bringing fresh towels and linens.
  • When you leave a hotel, you don’t have to worry about cleaning your room or doing anything else.
  • Since hotels are centrally located, you may not need to rent a car or figure out transportation. Your hotel could be located near public transportation or in a very walkable location.
  • If you stay at a resort, which is another version of a hotel, everything you need is right on the property.
  • Hotels tend to be a secure accommodation option. Most hotels have front desks that are staffed around the clock, as well as onsite security professionals. They’re also well-lit and use security cameras.

What about the cons of a hotel?

  • A hotel can be expensive, and they up-charge for a lot of things, including bottles of water and even using the internet.
  • You may feel like you have less privacy, and you might be disturbed by your neighbours or things happening in the hallway.
  • Hotels can feel more generic and less immersive than other accommodation options.

What Are the Pros and Cons of a Vacation Rental?

If you opt for a vacation rental, upsides include:

  • You may get more space.
  • Vacation rentals can feel cosier.
  • Many rentals are equipped with conveniences like you have at home. For example, the kitchen may be fully stocked, you may have access to laundry machines, and there may be things like a coffee maker.
  • If you have a full kitchen in your rental, you can buy groceries and save money on eating out.
  • The location of a rental may be better to get a feel for your surroundings and the true authenticity of a destination.
  • Vacation rentals can offer more privacy.

The downsides of a vacation rental include:

  • As a renter, you’re on your own as far as activities and figuring out what you want to do and how to do it. You might talk to the rental agency or host when you check-in, but otherwise, you won’t have help like you would from a hotel.
  • Guests have to clean up their vacation rental and perhaps wash their sheets and towels. You’re often expected to leave the rental in the same condition that you found it in.
  • You may feel less safe and secure in a vacation rental, particularly if it’s in an isolated location.
  • With a vacation rental, you might need to rent a car to get around.

So which is best? Neither is better than the other. It depends on your situation. Your budget, how many people you’re going to be traveling with, whether you have kids with you and how much work you’re willing to do when you travel all factor into the decision as far as whether you should go with a hotel or a vacation rental on your next trip. There are pros and cons of both options.
