June 7, 2022

The dating scene in 2022 is very different to how it looked 20 or even 10 years ago. There are now more ways than ever to meet a potential romantic partner but do they work? Read on to find out the most popular ways people meet their romantic partners in 2022.

How Do People Find Love in 2022?

Here are some of the most popular ways people meet romantic partners.

Dating apps

The popularity of online dating continues to rise, and use of dating apps surged during the pandemic. Many people meet potential romantic partners through popular dating apps such as Tinder and Bumble. Finding love this way isn’t without its pitfalls but it enables you to connect with like-minded people who you might not have met otherwise.

Social media

Social media opens up our worlds, allowing us to connect with others that have shared hobbies and interests. It offers the possibility of finding a romantic partner who may not be geographically nearby but who still shares your passions and worldview.

At work

In 1990, approximately 1 in 5 couples met through work but in contrast, recent data from the ‘How Couples Meet and Stay Together Study‘ from Stanford University suggests this is now more like 1 in 10. However, here in the UK a 2020 YouGov poll found that 18% of Brits met their most recent partner through work. To some extent this will depend on where you work as well as your age – the data from YouGov showed that workplace romances were more common among the 45- to 54-year-old age group.

Through friends

Being introduced to a romantic partner through friends is still a popular way to find love and unlike online dating, you have the bonus of having a friend’s recommendation before you even meet a potential partner.

On dating shows

Dating TV shows are becoming an increasingly popular way to look for love. A study by European lingerie specialists Hunkemöller found that over half of 25-34 year old Brits would consider going onto a dating show, with Love Island the most popular with over a quarter (28%) reporting that they’d be happy to apply for the show.

In terms of success, the research found that the Netflix show Love is Blind currently has the highest success rate, with a third (33%) of the couples still together after the show. Too Hot to Handle wasn’t too far behind with 30% of the couples still together, and meanwhile, over a quarter of Love Island couples remain together after the show with many having married and starting a family together.

At University

University remains a popular way to meet a romantic partner, particularly in the 18-24 age group. For many, university is the first time they will be living away from home and exploring who they are and how they want to spend their time, making it the ideal time to meet new people.

At Bars

It may seem a bit old-fashioned but plenty of people still meet romantic partners by chance on a night out or while enjoying a few drinks with friends at a bar.

How Will People Find Love in the Future?

So what does the future hold for dating and romance? With dating apps as popular as ever, it seems like that technology will be even more present in the dating scene, with Virtual Reality (VR) potentially playing a role in bringing people together. The advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and improved algorithms could also help people find their perfect match.
