A business plan is a formal document that should be created for any business right at the start of the venture. It is a written document that acts as a guide or a roadmap for the business to follow. It outlines all the important parts of a business, including the strategies, finances and goals that will bring the business success.

It helps to manage and guide the business on the right track, provide it with milestones to reach and helps to communicate the vision of the business to investors, lenders, stakeholders and employees. It will also help you stay afloat as well as prevent and manage risks early on.

A business plan is made up of the executive summary, an operational plan, a market analysis, financial forecasts, product and services, management, organisational structure, and a marketing strategy.

While you might want to jump right into your business, it is vital that you take some time to create a business plan. Your future self will thank you for it.

#1 Research and preparation

The first thing you must do is seek out a business plan example and template, so you know what important elements you need to include in your own business plan. This can then kick-start the first step you must complete, which is research. You want to conduct thorough research into your market and your industry, so you can begin to create your business plan. This research will inform your answers.

#2 Define your audience

Your audience is going to be the most important part of your business. If you don’t know who you are selling to, then you are not going to have a profitable business product, service or set up. This will define everything else you do – from product or service development to your marketing strategies.

#3 Complete the key sections of your business plan

Executive summary

This is a brief overview of the business plan, which you will write last as it will summarise everything in the document, but it sits at the beginning of the document.

Business description

In detail, write the mission, values and structure of your business.

Products and services

A detailed description of what you offer, how it solves consumer problems, what value it adds and what pricing model you will follow. Quality products should be made using simple, reliable processes that focus on good materials, proper handling, and steady production methods. This can include different steps like assembling parts, checking quality, packaging goods, and running equipment such as conveyors, filling machines, capping units, and a wine labeler, along with other similar tools used in production lines.

Market analysis

All of your market research should be detailed here, including the size of the market, your specific target audience and industry trends.

Financial plan

Your financial plan should be well thought through, as this will be the backbone of your business. You need to include start-up costs and all the ongoing expenses it will take to run and grow your business. You will also need a realistic revenue forecast. You will need to find a start up business account to safely manage your money.

Marketing strategy

Create a clear plan that outlines how you will find and attract your ideal customers and generate the sales to meet your business and financial goals.

Depending on what template you choose, there may be more elements to include in your business plan.

A business plan is a vital document. Make sure you complete this before anything else in your business.
