How to Motivate Your Child to Learn

June 13, 2022

Learning should be a fun and rewarding experience for your child – showing your child what they have to look forward to in their learning journey will really help them with their appreciation of school and beyond.

Unfortunately, sometimes your child may just not be enjoying school at the moment, and a lot can be the cause. What’s important is what you do next to help your child remember why they go to school.

In this guide from an independent school in New York we look at the ways you can help your child find their love for learning.

Find the reason why your child isn’t enjoying learning

While the reason your child has stopped feeling motivated came naturally out of boredom, there could be something else you’re not yet aware of. It’s worth doing a bit of investigation to get to the bottom of what could be happening. There may be some areas of school that they’re really struggling with and want to avoid, or particular subjects that are just unbearable for them at the moment. You can discuss more serious concerns with your child’s teachers to get to the bottom of it.

Have a reward system in place

If your child feels like they’re going to be rewarded for their actions they’re definitely going to feel more motivated. There are just going to be areas of your child’s studies where they struggle more than others, which is completely understandable. However, your child needs to learn the art of coping under pressure and being resilient. This is their chance to shine through receiving rewards for their efforts.

Explore different learning styles

We all learn in different ways that can help us understand what’s being asked of us. Your child may be struggling with the way the lessons are being taught at the moment and prefers to pick things up in a different way. This is where you can help your child figure out how they best learn and what you can do at home to help facilitate this.

Have a timetable for study time

Organisation is key. If your child knows when and where they need to be to help them with their studies they may well feel more motivated to learn. Have some learning sessions together that are relaxed and fun while still paying particular attention to your child’s weaker areas. These sessions can help reinforce what a child has learnt in class, especially if they have a unique learning style, and help them see the benefit of learning.
