How To Raise a Respectful Child
Respect is a key factor in developing a child’s confidence, their manners and kindness towards others, as well as building strong-willed children who will be able to tackle so many different situations.

Respect is all about understanding others, treating everyone as equals and learning about how to offer support to others when they need it. Even if we dislike someone, there should always be a level of respect given towards others.
To raise a respectful child, here are some good ways to start building that level of kindness and care towards others from this prep school in Middlesex.
Teach them good manners
The basics of most respectful encounters is through the language children are taught when they’re younger. This often comes from the parents, so be sure to use positive language in front of your child where you can. For example, if your child is taking longer than usual to get dressed, ask them politely to get up 10 minutes earlier to work on that. Give them ways to clean themselves up if they make a mess instead of telling them off or causing a fuss. These little things will prepare them to be nice and understanding towards others when they’re older.
Other ways to teach good manners is through the language used in different scenarios. For example, opening the door for others, your child asking permission to do something before proceeding, and saying thank you when offered something.
Get them involved in decisions at home
There are loads of choices your kid can get involved with at home. You might not know what to have for dinner, why don’t you ask your child what they’d like? Or you can ask them to choose the music you’d like to listen to while you’re cooking.
You can even ask them to decide what they’re going to do for the day. Giving them the power to do whatever they’d like to do can give your child a heap of confidence and improve their self-worth as well.
Allow your child to be curious
A lot of learning about respect is done through trial and error, and understanding other people’s feelings and how they perceive things. Letting your child be curious is important for allowing them to understand the world in their own way, but also to let them understand that mistakes can be made and are how we grow as people.
Free play, baking, making dinner with their parents and allowing them free time to themselves are good ways to cultivate their curiosity safely.
