May 1, 2022

Many of us like to keep fit. Exercise is the starting point for all of us to find a sport that is fun but also that tests us and has a social element to it.

Over the years I have played so many sports. From football and tennis to my biggest love which is cycling. I have always been keen to try new sports and one such sport that is sweeping the globe as one of the fastest growing sports is Padel. It has now become one the fastest growing sports in Europe and the UK with clubs opening at a very quick pace in cities.

What is Padel?

Padel has been described as a cross between tennis and squash. It is a racquet sport usually played in doubles and played on a court with walls. It is believed that Padel originated in Latin America and Spain in the early 70’s. The rules that were used in those early days are still the ones that apply today.

How to play Padel

Padel is a racquet sport that uses the wall of the courts plus there’s a net in the middle. It is not about strength. It is a game of strategy and cooperation with your partner to outwit your opponent. As Padel is not about strength this means that it’s suitable for all ages and levels of ability.

Where to play Padel

As I have mentioned, Padel is one the fastest growing sports in the UK and their clubs are opening all the time currently in the UK. Many of the Padel clubs are membership clubs only and some are pay and play courts. Currently there are 46 Padel clubs with a total of 88 courts of which 21 are indoor courts, 10 are covered courts and 57 are outdoor clubs. What equipment you need to Padel

As more Padel clubs open up in the UK to the public and it’s popularity grows more and more sports outlets in-store and on-line are now stocking Padel equipment. Here is an idea of some equipment you will need to start playing Padel.

1. Padel Racquet

Like any sport if you are just starting out playing Padel then there will be a good selection of equipment with Padel racquets. To make sure you like the sport you can buy a less expensive one and if Padel grips you then you can move up to a more professional racquet. It would be worth investing in a quality grip so the racquet doesn’t slip out of your hand while playing as that will help and improve your game.

2. Padel Balls

It’s important to pick the right balls because you score off the walls, so it’s important to use Padel balls with a certain bounce rate. One such ball is the Dunlop Pro Padel balls.

3. What footwear to use for Padel

It is very important to have the right footwear for playing Padel. You will need a shoe that can keep up with the pace of Padel but also be flexible enough to protect your feet from injury because often you will have to reach various areas of the court.

The great part of Padel is you actually don’t need much equipment to start playing. Here is a great article that goes into much more detail of the best equipment needed for playing Padel A Guide To Buying The Very Best Padel Equipment And Clothing.
