Preparing Teens To Fly The Nest

October 6, 2020

Statistics show that a growing number of people now continue to live at home into their twenties. Still, if your teen is leaving home for university or to live with their partner, you must help them prepare. While your child will still need you once they’ve flown the nest, this is one phase where your support will be more valuable than ever.

While you may not notice it, there are many aspects of life where your teachings can make a world of difference. Here are five of the best.

Financial Support

The most obvious solution is to give your teen some money to help out with the next phase of their life. However, financial teachings can be equally valuable, especially if you can show your teen how to avoid student loans. If you are in the position to do it, you could combine the two concepts. This enables a better quality of life for your son or daughter. Even if they are not heading to university, the benefits of improved financial management should not be ignored.

Household Skills

Once your teen flies the nest, they will quickly realise just how easy they had it at home. However, the living situations are far more difficult when your child does not possess the key life skills. Whether it’s teaching them how to cook quick and budget-friendly meals, or how to hang out their washing doesn’t matter. Daily life will improve as a result of those developments. It’s something that your teen probably won’t appreciate right now, but will thank you for in the long haul.

Driving

Moving out is your child’s opportunity to gain a sense of freedom and independence. This becomes far easier when they are able to drive. Therefore, paying for their driving lessons is one of the greatest presents you can give in the months leading up to this time. While it may be tempting to take on the role of instructor, it’s best to leave the pros in charge. Aside from avoiding disagreements, it saves your son or daughter from picking up your bad habits. And yes, you do have them.

Cheap Fun

Maintaining a social life is particularly crucial when you’re young. Whether settling down with a partner or moving into uni halls, cheap social activities are ideal. After all, nobody can afford to hit the pubs and clubs night after night. Learning to appreciate the simple joys of board games or making up competitive games to play with roommates is ideal. On a side note, promoting fitness is vital. As a parent, you want to know that your child has put their health first.

Responsibility

If your teen is ready to step out into the big bad world, it’s vital that they do it in style. While living it up is the first thing on their mind, you need to instill discipline. They must prepare for unforeseen situations that can surface from time to time. This means that they must put insurances in place, and make contingencies for if they were to lose their job or suffer an injury. When supported by lessons on how to take care of possessions in a responsible manner, your teen will be just fine.

Go dad.
