Springtime The Perfect Time For A Garden Makeover

April 15, 2025

Summer is fast approaching and it is without a doubt my favourite time of year. It means my family and I will spend many hours of the day out in the garden enjoying the sunshine – hopefully!

As a family we love to have bbq’s and enjoy lunch in the garden. It’s the perfect way to have a relaxing weekend and spend some quality time with family.

Unfortunately, our garden is in need of some TLC. It’s starting to look a bit tired and is desperately in need of a makeover but, it’s a question of deciding what we want to do with it.

One thing that is an absolute definite when it comes to our garden makeover is that I want to make it maintenance free. We currently have way too much grass and I seem to be forever spending hours cutting the grass during the summer when all I want to be doing is relaxing in my garden. So, part of the makeover will involve getting rid of some of the grass and replacing it with a maintenance free covering.

The perfect solution is to use Decorative Aggregate such as gravel, slate or pebbles. These are a perfect alternative to soil or grass.

Some of the benefits of garden ground cover

  • It provides moisture retention which will help your plants survive during dry months of summer.
  • For example slate or gravel ground cover cannot retain water so no more puddles.
  • There is no need to weed areas and you can create water features such as a water feature.
  • Decorative aggregates are very durable and weather generally does not affect them.
  • Of course it’s also a simple DIY task because pennies, slate or gravel are very easy to lay.

For our garden we have decided that we want to create a few new different areas using different aggregates, so here are my ideas that we want to create this summer.

One corner of the garden is a bit wild and overgrown so the idea is to clear the whole area and have an ornamental bird bath. Then around the bird bath we want to lay grey slate and have some flower pots with all year plants growing to give that area a clean look.

I personally love the sound of running water in the garden. It really is the most relaxing sound in the world so the plan is to create a water feature which will be surrounded by a rockery and this will all be created using pebbles with a waterfall so you have that lovely sound of running water.

So those are my plans for giving the garden a makeover this summer and trying to make it more maintenance free so I get to sit down in garden instead of constantly working in it!
