The UK’s Top Golf Tournaments To Look Out For In 2022

April 28, 2022

Did watching the Masters whet your appetite for another superb summer of golf in the UK? After four days of thrilling play at Augusta in early April, Scottie Scheffler held off Rory McIlroy’s late charge to win by three shots and don the iconic green jacket – the first major title for the American.

If Scheffler’s display had you reaching in your bag for your wedges to practice your approach play, you’re certainly not alone – with amateurs and professionals everywhere no doubt doing the same.

But there’s no reason why fans on the other side of the pond should have all the fun – there’s plenty of high-class tournament play to look forward to on these shores this year. Here, we’ve picked out three of the very best.

The Open Championship

When is it?

The Open takes place between July 14th and 17th.

Where is it?

This year’s event is being held on the Old Course at St Andrew’s, considered the home of golf.

Who’s the defending champion?

The 2021 tournament, played at Royal St George’s in Sandwich, was won by Collin Morikawa. The American finished 15 under par, two strokes clear of nearest challenger and 2017 champion Jordan Spieth. This was Morikawa’s second major title, after the US PGA Championship in 2020.

What else do I need to know?

This year marks the 150th edition of The Open, where players will compete for the iconic Claret Jug – previously lifted by legends of the sport including Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.

The British Masters

When is it?

This year’s event will be held between May 5th and 8th.

Where is it?

The Belfry, in Warwickshire.

Who’s the defending champion?

Richard Bland won in 2021, defeating Guido Migliozzi in a play-off after the pair had finished level on 13 under par.

What else do I need to know?

Victory last year was Bland’s first on the European Tour – coming in his 478th appearance at the age of 48.

The Wales Open

When is it?

The 2022 Wales Open is due to take place between 4th and 7th of August.

Where is it?

The tournament is hosted at the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport.

Who’s the defending champion?

Nacho Elvira lifted the trophy in 2021, recovering from blowing a six-shot overnight lead to defeat Justin Harding in a play-off.

What else do I need to know?

The Wales Open was not held between 2015 and 2019 but was back on the calendar for 2020 following a re-jig in light of the coronavirus pandemic. Four-time Champions League winner, Wales’ all-time record goalscorer and huge golf enthusiast Gareth Bale hosts the event.
