Why is it so important to encourage your children?

There are many reasons that it’s so vital to encourage your children and you should ensure you implement positive encouragement to them from a young age. Some of the reasons for this is that:

It instils them with confidence – positive encouragement shows your child they can achieve anything they put their mind to and can make them feel a lot more confident about their decisions. This, in turn, will make them feel more confident in themselves and they will be better and more well-rounded people overall.

It can make them more independent – knowing you believe in them and that they have been praised for similar decisions in the past can help them to become more independent and learn to do things on their own.

It can improve your relationship with them – children look to you for advice and words of wisdom. By giving them encouragement they will feel closer to you, trust you and feel they can talk to you about any issues that are going on in their lives.

It can help them to persevere – As we experience in adulthood, if you find something isn’t going your way, it can be easy to give up. By giving your child positive encouragement, they will keep trying with whatever it is that’s challenging them and find out what they can achieve when they work at it.

What are some top ways you can encourage your children?

As stated above, positive encouragement is one of the most important things you can do in your child’s development and is something you can do from a very young age. No matter if they are a toddler or a teen, encouragement is vital for them to improve and become more confident. Here are just a few ways you do this.

Show them what they can achieve and the different career paths out there

No matter what your child wants to be when they grow up, show them it is possible. Whether they want to be a web designer who creates professional school websites, a business manager, a teacher, or a clothes designer, let them know there are so many options out there. The more you open their eyes to the world, the greater the encouragement they will receive and the more positive they will feel about their future. Children can be discouraged if they feel their parents want them to go in a very specific career direction and can feel they are letting their parents down if they do something different. Show them this isn’t the case and that you will support them no matter what they decide to do in their future.

Be supportive of their decisions and let them make their own mistakes

When you have a child it can be tempting to sway your children in a certain direction in order to have them make the choices you want, yet this isn’t necessarily helpful. Instead, you should listen carefully to decisions that your children make even if it’s not necessarily the right ones. (Of course, unless it’s something dangerous or harmful to them in one way or another!) It’s important you let your child make mistakes so they can learn from them going forward and grow into a stronger person.

Have patience and don’t take over

There are many instances where it can be frustrating having your child do something and you want to help out, yet it’s important to let them do it themselves so they can learn. An example of this can be if your little one is doing their homework – rather than telling them how to find the answer such as in a maths question, help them figure it out. Or perhaps they are learning to tie their shoes or tell the time. Every time they ask for help, let them try it out themselves first and see if they can get the hang of it without you having to do it. This will show them how capable they are and encourage them to try rather than look to you for assistance all of the time.

Help them work through the tough times in their life

If your child is going through a tough time in their life such as if they’re being bullied or are stuck with a life choice such as where to go to college or what subjects to pick for school, make sure you are there for them. Sit down and take the time to go through their problems with them, offering solutions and insight and just being a general source of comfort and help. It can be tough seeing your child go through something difficult, but by being there and helping them it can bring you both closer together and also show you encourage and support what they are doing.

Show them why they should do things in their life (such as work hard at school or eat healthily)

It’s all very well and good telling your child or teen what they should do in their life, but by giving a good reasoning as to why, it can help offer encouragement and affirmation. For example, if they are slacking at school, instead of just telling them they need to work harder, tell them about all the doors that working hard at their education can open and how it can help them with their careers when they get older. If they aren’t perhaps being as healthy as they could be, show them the benefits of a good nutritional diet and exercise. These can help put things into perspective and give a good reasoning as a incentive for them to change for the better.

Encourage them both verbally and non verbally

Encouragement can be both verbal and non verbal and both are equally as important. Saying things such as “you can do it” and “I believe in you” are vital for healthy development, but so are other things. Picking them up and dropping them off to their music instrument practice for example, shows you support what they’re doing, offering rewards for completing tasks, or sometimes even a thumbs up can all be really positive forms of encouragement for them.

Spend time with them on their own

When you have multiple children it can be difficult to find time to see your partner, let alone see your children on their own. Yet it is important you make time to do this and it can really help your child to be their best possible self. Take some time out every month or week to just spend it with one child doing something they love. By taking an interest in them, their likes and dislikes, and forming your own relationship this can be a really special thing in their life. You will also be more on their wavelength if you do this as you will know them on a deeper level and they will feel you really understand them and take them seriously.

Encourage them to always ask questions

Asking questions is something else that should always be encouraged as this is a great way for your kids to learn and open their minds. Teach them that no question is too small or too big, too silly or too specific. Try to answer them in the best way you can and take time to listen to what they’re asking, or find out why they might be asking certain things. By taking a vested interest in what they are interested in, it can really help them to feel encouraged and also to broaden their knowledge.

These are just a few things you can do in order to encourage your child to be their best possible self. As a parent, all you want is for your little one to grow up with aspirations and motivation to succeed and be happy. You want them to thrive and know you have positively impacted their life as much as you can. From spending quality time with them so they know they are loved, to encouraging their hobbies and interests and letting them make their own mistakes, these are all things that can have a really positive impact.
