What DIY Projects Can You Try In Your Own Home?

June 24, 2022

Now that summer is here, it’s a great time to tackle those jobs you’ve been saving for the warmer weather.

Rather than calling in a tradesperson, however, see if you can look at your finances and budget for some DIY home updates. Decide what tools you might need, such as paint or a drill, and buy the essentials before you begin.

As well as saving you money, taking on these projects yourself will give you the chance to put your own stamp on things.

To help you whittle down your list of tasks, here’s a look at some of the main jobs to focus on this season.

Outside space

Start outside your home. While the rain-free days are here, it’s worth assessing the roof for any tiles that came loose during the storms of the colder months and clearing the gutters. You’ll need to make sure you have someone to hold onto the ladder while you’re doing these jobs.

It’s worth tending to the garden and giving your front door a fresh coat of paint now too.

Update the kitchen

The kitchen is usually the heart of the home, where there’s a constant buzz of activity. Why not reflect this high-energy space with a fresh colour scheme? The vibrant yellow that’s a huge interior design trend for 2022 is a striking choice for the cupboards or, if you’re not feeling up to this bold move, try adding splashbacks in this sunny shade.

Declutter the bedroom

Having a clutter-free bedroom can be hugely beneficial for your wellbeing. In fact, back in 2010, a study revealed that those with a cluttered home were more likely to have high levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

Decluttering your bedroom is a great way to reimagine the space and add a sense of balance. Work out what you want to keep and what needs to go. From there, you can decide how you want to store the things you’re keeping. You might want to hang some shelves or add some hooks so you can display your belongings.

Insulate your home

You might think that summer is an odd time to consider insulation, but the warmer months are a great opportunity to assess areas where heat might be escaping. This is because you’re not in a cold house while you try to get on top of where the problem areas are, so you can make some changes while you’re at a comfortable temperature.

So, look at adding insulation in your loft and think about sealing up areas where there’s a draught. Also, you might want to introduce window dressings to keep the heat in and add a rug to prevent heat from escaping through floorboards.

How about a new colour here? Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2022 is a lovely blue-violet shade that would add a calming tone to some curtains in a living room or a rug.

What DIY are you attempting in the coming months?
