What’s Involved in School Enrichment?

School plays a pivotal role in the person your child grows up to be, after all, the years that are spent there are some of the most influential. Outside of the curriculum they offer a host of “enrichment activities” to enhance their learning and development. They take place outside of usual lessons and help children to develop new skills, apply those they already have to new contexts and explore their passions and interests. Examples of how a school might provide these opportunities include the provision of clubs, school trips and talks from guest speakers. School Competitions

Schools are often split into teams, or “houses” as they are called for the purpose of school competitions and helping children feel a part of the school community. They are encouraged to take part in games and work together to compete against other houses which teaches them vital skills, such as teamwork and how to deal with competition. 

Guest Speakers

On occasion schools invite guest speakers to talk about their experiences that are specific and career oriented, or totally unrelated. They give children the opportunity to learn from those that are more knowledgeable and gain new perspectives. This can help them to make informed decisions about their future and appreciate what they have.

School Trips

Field trips are an opportunity for children to explore themes in the real world and deepen their understanding. For languages they may go on a trip abroad to Spain for example which gives them real life experience of the culture and the chance to speak the language. While of course learning theory is important, field trips are far superior as lessons are underpinned with rich memories.

Clubs

There are a variety of clubs children can join that range from netball to chess. They give them the opportunity to develop new skills, strengthen those they already have, meet new people, and make friends. As these take place outside of school, i.e., before school, lunchtimes, and the end of the school day, they demonstrate clear passion which can be good for when they apply to other schools and colleges.
