Yay! The Bike Stabilisers Are Gone A Life Lesson Learnt

April 25, 2019

A few months ago our twin girls asked for the stabilisers to be taken off their bikes. So, as you do, we did exactly that. Less than an hour later they were back on the bikes. The girls balance was just not there and steering the bike was, well a disaster! There was lots of crashing, banging legs on the pedals and a few tears thrown in too! My wife and I decided to put it off for another day.

Moving forward to a couple of days ago the girls asked for the stabilisers to be removed again. I had my doubts, but sometimes as a parent you have to take a leap of faith and what happened when we took them off really did surprise me.

Within seconds of removing the stabilisers the girls were trying to pedal on their own and to my shock as I turned around I saw the incredible sight of one of them moving at speed towards me pedalling and balancing on her bike with the widest smile you could imagine and she was followed very quickly by her sister smiling just as much!

The firsts in our children’s lives are never ending and they don’t stop! Even thought they are not babies anymore there are still many firsts you get to see and enjoy, and have an overwhelming sense of pride for your children when they achieve something that is a first.

Once the girls got going there was no holding them back and you could see their little faces light up like Christmas trees as they became more adept at balancing and pedalling at the same time. My heart was bursting with pride, and love, and it really put a smile on my face that quite honestly I couldn’t remove.

The girls are only seven years old and this particular first of riding their bikes with stabilisers is also a life lesson that I think that will help them through life. The lesson is quite simply determination, achievement and the desire to do something they have not done before.

It doesn’t matter if it’s your daughter or son, we want to raise a generation of children that face challenges and overcome them and a part of that is these little milestones of firsts like riding a bike without stabilisers. It teaches them that anything, absolutely anything is possible with perseverance and desire.

Our children are the future of this world and we need them to be fully equipped to take on what is going to be a troubled world. To basically clean up the mess past generations have made. A part of that is teaching them achievement when they are little and it’s ok to feel proud of themselves.

I would love to hear your thoughts. Do you think little milestones like this prepare our children for adulthood?
