[ad] 10 Top Tips For Surviving the Divorce Process
Finding the divorce process to be a difficult and emotional task? For my top tips on surviving a divorce, both mentally and physically, read on…
For some, the divorce process can be trying matter. Especially for the unwilling divorcees who may still be in love with their partner, this can be heart-breaking.
Whether you’re at the beginning of the process, at the family law consultation point, or are right at the end of it all, moving on starts here. Although it may not feel like it right now, you can get through it.
Think of it like this – this is your chance to do everything you’ve ever thought about doing, but never did. This is the time when your new life begins. So, for my top tips on surviving the divorce process, stick around…

1. Get into the Mindset That You’re Now Focusing on Yourself
My first tip for surviving a divorce? Start with yourself! Think about everything you always wanted to do, and everything you used to love doing, and start it up again.
Some more specific ways to focus on yourself are listed below, but I think it’s great to start off with the mindset that this is YOUR time. Work on improving yourself as a person, and do everything you always wanted to do. What better time to do it than right now?
2. Reignite Your Old Hobbies
Everyone has hobbies, or something they used to do and absolutely loved. Whether it be dancing, singing, sport, acting, reading, writing, learning, whatever it may be, now is the ideal time to start it up again.
3. Start Some New Hobbies
On a similar note, now think about all the things you’ve always wanted to do, but never got around to doing. Have you always wanted to learn a language, for example, or do you strive to go to the gym more regularly? Perhaps you want to start up a new sporting activity, or travel around the country more… whatever it may be, now’s the time!
4. Do Some Exercise
As I’m sure you know, exercising is proven to improve peoples’ moods, helping you to feel happier and more awake. So, how about taking up a sport? Be it running, yoga, a team activity, or even just taking a walk every so often, this is sure to do the trick.
This top tip goes hand-in-hand with tips three and four, as many hobbies involve exercise. So, if this is the case, you’re killing two, or even three, birds with one stone. In fact, not only are you doing something for yourself, and keeping your mind occupied, you’re also releasing endorphins that can improve your mood too.
5. Throw Yourself into Your Career
Having a significant other can sometimes put a stopper in your life aspirations. So, getting a divorce is actually the perfect opportunity for you to focus on what you really want to do in life.
You’ve already got your dream job? Amazing! Now’s the time to expand in every possible way, putting your focus on new and creative ways to succeed.
Aren’t in the job you love already? No problem at all, because now’s your chance to make these changes to kickstart a new career path.
Some ideas could be getting the training or education you need to quit your job and move to something you care about. You could even think about starting your own business! At the end of the day, it’s all about perspective. This life change doesn’t have to drag you down; it can lift you up in the best of ways.

6. Meet Up with Your Friends
It’s likely that, as you read this, you can think of at least a few friends who you haven’t seen or contacted for years and years, right? Friends from school, college, university, or old workplaces that just exited the picture with the snap of your fingers.
This is, very sadly, just a natural part of growing up. As you start to lead an adult life, it’s commonplace for friends to become a second, third, or even fourth priority.
Well, why not take this time to get back in contact with your long-lost friends. They could be the support you need to lean on, and the bonds you require to distract yourself.
What’s more, remember that you’re single now, so you could even relive the days of old, and head out for a much-needed night out. Whatever you enjoy doing with your friends, just do it!
7. Spend Quality Time with Your Children
The likelihood is, if your children are young, they’ll be taking your divorce harder than you are. That makes this the perfect time to spend quality time with them; not only will this benefit them, but it’ll also help you through the divorce process.
Take them on those trips you were always putting off, go for walks together, and use this time to bond with one another. By taking part in fun activities, you’ll be immersed in something which can help keep your mind occupied.
8. Embrace and Acknowledge Your Feelings
For some, distracting yourself with activities and people might not be the answer. Yes, these fun activities will provide a short-term solution, but it’s likely you’ll still be hurting inside.
So, one key aspect to dealing with a loss – which is exactly what this is – is to acknowledge that you’re grieving. Give yourself time to cry, to miss your ex-partner, be scared for the future, and so on…
These feelings are so natural, and ignoring them will be a lot worse than relieving yourself of them. Then, once you’ve had your cry, it’s time to focus on the things you never got a chance to do!
9. Get Some Counselling
Number eight on my list is sometimes easier said than done. So, what’s a great method of recognising and embracing these feelings? Talking about them.
It may seem cliché, but talking things through with someone who understands, or is an expert in the field, is very important. You can’t bottle these feelings up. So, whether it be a friend, a family member, or even a professional, having regular contact with someone you can talk to could be a great help.
10. Connect with Other Divorced People
My final top tip for surviving the divorce process is connecting with other divorced people. This falls in nicely with tip number nine; that talking things through is a great way to process your emotions. That said, what better way than to do just that than by talking things through with other divorcees?
This is where social media is your best friend, as Facebook will most certainly have a group designated for local divorcees in your area. By discussing how you’re feeling with people who know exactly what you’re going through, it’ll help you feel a lot less alone.

See, the Divorce Process Doesn’t Have to be So Difficult…
So, those are my top tips for surviving the divorce process. As you can see, the common pattern here is taking time for yourself.
As part of a couple, it becomes easy to think of yourself as tied to another being, so your hobbies and friends can get left behind. Now, you can reignite your old hobbies and friendships, and do that thing you always wanted to do… this is your chance!
What I’m saying is, it’s all about perception. If you perceive this as an opportunity, it’ll be just that.
