3 Foods To Cut Out Of Your Kid’s Diet

July 13, 2023

One of the strangest things about growing up is getting to the point where you make your own food. Suddenly, with control over what you eat, you realise your parents were feeding you a lot of junk. It’s not completely their fault – they came from a different generation and busy lives also mean you cut corners now and then.

Regardless, when you become a parent, it’s important to keep your kid’s diet healthy. Bring them up on healthy foods and instil good eating habits in them. This will set them up for a life full of healthiness! We’re not looking at good foods to eat in this guide, but rather the opposite.

What foods should you avoid giving your kids on a regular basis?

Processed foods

Processed foods are very bad for your health as they undergo so many, well, processes before they make it to your plate. Lots of stuff gets added to them for preservation purposes, meaning they tend to be really high in sodium.

This can lead to a whole string of health complications down the line for your kids, such as an increased chance of developing heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. To compound the problem, processed foods are one of the main foods to avoid for arthritis as they’re inflammatory. So, they’re good for YOU to avoid too, particularly if you have joint pain.

Foods with added sugar

Sugar is naturally occurring in lots of different foods. You don’t have to avoid giving your kids foods with sugar as this would be impossible. Instead, look to cut down on their ingestion of added sugars.

So many drinks and snacks contain added sugars that load extra calories onto your kid’s plates and can lead to obesity or weight gain from a young age. Plus, added sugars are linked to diabetes, liver disease and a whole collection of serious health problems. Giving your child a snack or two won’t hurt them, but don’t let them eat foods with added sugars all the time.

Margarine

This is a funny one as margarine was considered the healthier alternative to butter for many years. In fact, loads of us were probably brought up eating margarine because it had less fat!

Years passed and more research came out telling us that butter is much healthier because margarine has hydrogenated oils and is made of unsaturated fat. This type of fat can be bad for the heart and may increase cholesterol levels. Obviously, you don’t want this to happen to your kids! Cut margarine from their diet and opt for a natural butter instead, but still eat it in moderation.

Are your kids likely to suffer from serious diet-related health conditions right now? Other than excessive weight gain, the chances are slim. But that’s not the point! The point is to get them on healthy diets now so there’s less chance of them developing these issues when they’re older. You’re starting them out on the right food so they don’t have to spend years fighting against health conditions as adults.
