3 Rules for Bloggers to Live By

Blogging is something that we have all grown used to but when you think about it, the process is pretty weird. For lots of people, blogging is about sharing thoughts on their personal lives and families, for others blogging is about sharing tips and tricks or showing expertise and for most, blogging falls somewhere in between.

Over the years, blogging has developed and there are now blogs on pretty much everything. And yet, the rules for blogging haven’t changed too much.

If you are thinking about starting a blog, there are just 3 things to consider first.

Always Write Something That Interests You

If you have any hope of writing regularly, you need to make sure that you choose topics that interest you. This can be anything from gender issues to the best places to eat pizza and everything in between.

With the wide reach your blog can achieve, there is no reason that you should aim for a particular target audience or try to write something you think people will be interested in. The joy of the internet is that it allows people to find the things they are interested in and your audience will find you naturally, whatever you write.

Don’t be Afraid to Branch Out

Writing about things that interest you also means that you shouldn’t be afraid to branch out. There are lots of blogs that focus on just one subject, but if you have multiple interests that’s great! Though a general theme might be useful, there’s no reason that you can’t develop new sections of your blog and write about new interests too. Have a look at a blog like marty rogers for some inspiration.

Branching also makes you more attractive to companies that want to collaborate with affiliate links as they are more likely to be able to give you articles to publish if you have a range of options. Even if you don’t intend to create a profitable blog, it is good to plan for this just in case.

Speak With Your Own Voice

Some blogs – especially company blogs – can end up having a very bland voice. While this is fine for a corporate blog, your own blog should be written in your voice. This is because when people read your posts, they want to be able to imagine that they are listening to what you are saying. As Forever Amber puts it: be yourself, everyone else is taken.

Blogging is an amazing way to find your voice and if you are shy and lacking in confidence, it can really give you the boost you need to express yourself more often. As you learn to construct your opinions and start interacting with readers who comment, your confidence will start to grow and make regular social interactions a bit easier.

Over time, blogging will start to give you a sense of purpose as well as an outlet for making sense of the world and understanding it just that more than you did yesterday. Writing has a clarifying effect and if you haven’t tried it before, give it a go now and see what you think.

  1. Finding your own voice is something we all develop as bloggers and I am trying to develop mine as the months go by. Writing posts in drafts, then going back to them a few days later or a week later and editing them and making them sound more “ME” is something I have been doing as a way to improve my writing ability and style. Really glad you have uploaded this post and it is very helpful for all bloggers and writers out there ! x
