7 Senior-Friendly Sports and Activities You’ll Enjoy in Retirement

December 22, 2023

If you retire, you might decide that is the perfect opportunity to get in shape. Maybe you have put on a few extra pounds over the years. You might feel that getting in shape is also something that you can do with your spouse, partner, or friends.

You can find 55-plus communities in Boise, Idaho, that are some of the best in the country. These are places where you can be with other older adults who want to stay in shape, just like you do.

Let’s talk about a few activities you might try as you get more active in retirement.

Cycling

Riding bikes is something that seniors enjoy because it’s low impact. You get on the bike and start pedalling, and off you go.

Maybe you know how to ride a bike already because you used to do it as a kid. Perhaps you never stopped. Either way, as long as you maintain your bike and find some safe streets or a park to do it in, you should be good to go any time the weather is nice.

Jogging

You might also try jogging. You probably are not at a point in your life where you want to run at full speed because it’s hard on the knees. You can jog at your own pace, though. Many older adult communities have jogging tracks where you can do it indoors, or you can find a nearby park if the weather cooperates.

Swimming

Many of these older adult communities have swimming pools as well. Swimming is another low-impact activity, and you can do it every day if you like. Many people like getting in the water. It’s relaxing and refreshing.

Yoga

Maybe you would like to try yoga. Lots of retirement communities have classes that you can attend. You will be more motivated to do it if you’re surrounded by others who are doing the same moves that you are.

Yoga keeps you limber, which is crucial as you get older. You don’t want to risk getting stiff, which is likely to happen if you don’t stretch your muscles regularly.

Martial Arts

You might decide to try some martial arts classes in retirement. You might take Karate, Judo, Tae Kwon Do, or something else.

Martial arts can keep you limber, and they also usually involve a meditation element. That can keep both your body and mind in good shape at the same time.

Golf

Many older adults like playing golf, and a common debate among enthusiasts revolves around the difference between 3 vs 4 hybrid clubs. You might find a retirement community close to a golf course or more than one.

You can get your exercise while walking along the greens and fairways. If you don’t get around so well anymore, you can also ride in a golf cart.

Ping Pong

Maybe you want an activity that keeps you occupied but doesn’t take too much energy. Ping pong, also called table tennis, might be a good choice.

Many older adult facilities have ping pong tables. You can enjoy the bragging rights if you beat your friends.
