Being a first-time parent can be overwhelming, and designing a nursery with a baby on the way can feel like an impossible task, especially for first-time parents. Not only will the baby be spending a lot of time in this room, but you will also want it to be a functional and comforting space for everyone.

Keep the Theme Simple  

The possibilities for nursery themes seem endless, but try to pick something simple and cute for your baby’s room. It is important to remember that your child will grow out of the nursery before you know it, so choose a theme that can last or be easily transformed into a toddler’s room. 

A great place to start when choosing a theme is picking one thing to base it on. This could be a wallpaper you love, your favorite vacation spot, or just a color. If your wallpaper has three colors in it, only go with shades of those colors. Wherever you choose to start your theme, try to remain as close to it as possible. 

Painting can be a considerable task; if you don’t have time with everything else going on, consider hiring a professional painter to do the work for you.

Planning everything first will make shopping a breeze. After you’ve picked a theme, plan out exactly what furniture you will need and where you want to put it. The worst thing you could do is gather all of the room’s contents, only to realize the crib doesn’t fit. 

Ideally, a nursery should have specific spaces dedicated to sleeping, changing, nursing, and playing. Essential furniture includes a crib, changing table, and a chair for nursing. Any area designated for playing should be safe and away from sharp edges. 

Shop Second Hand

Furniture like cribs, changing tables, and rocking chairs can be expensive, and your nursery can quickly cost you a small fortune. If you’re looking for cheaper alternatives for these items, try looking online at second-hand sights like Facebook marketplace or in stores. 

Most people use their baby furniture once or maybe twice before their children outgrow it, so purchasing these items second-hand usually means they’re still in excellent condition. You can also try asking family and friends, especially those who have recently had children if they’re willing to part with anything. 

Keep it Peaceful

Your nursery’s goal is to be a place your baby can sleep and relax. You want to ensure that noise and light are easily controlled so that it is easy for your child to fall asleep. Thick rugs and drapes are a great way to block out noise, and room darkening shades help for daytime naps or bright street lights outside. 

Your baby will spend the most time in the nursery, but you will be in there almost as often. It’s no secret that being a new parent can be stressful, so you want the room to be a place you feel relaxed and comfortable as well.
