AD] Be Mighty ReCycle
This year Recycle Week starts on Monday 21st September and the theme of Recycle Week this year is Together we Recycle.
I have teamed up with the Welsh Government and WRAP Cymru (Waste and Resources Action Programme), so that together we can highlight and improve our recycling in Wales with their Be Mighty Recycle campaign.
This is the biggest ever campaign that Wales has ever rolled out and it’s launching in Recycle Week. Wales is currently the third best country in the world at recycling, but Wales is on a mission to get to number one. Wales has made amazing progress on recycling over the last 10 years, but there is a long way still to go, which is where we, the people, have a part to play. Most people recycle on a regular basis, but we all need to recycle all of our waste all of the time.

During the last 5 months when people have been spending more time in their homes, household waste has definitely increased. This is why it’s so important households recycle everything they can.
One area where we have made a bigger effort as a family is with food waste. We have eight year old twin girls and we as parents are teaching them from a very young age how to recycle properly. This is such an important life lesson that they learn from a young age so that they can take the habit of correct recycling into their adulthood. This will in turn make for a better world for not only their generations but the generations that will come after them.
Food waste is an area that can have the biggest impact on Wales and if we start recycling more and if we increase the recycling of inedible food waste this will directly help to tackle climate change.
To help our twin girls understand what goes in each waste bin we came up with a plan which makes it easier for them. We simply stick photos, for example, to the food waste caddy so they know instantly that a banana skin, vegetable peelings and teabags go in the food waste bin. By doing it this way it will develop into a habit that will become very natural for them to recycle properly.
Every local authority in Wales collects food waste and every item of food can be recycled. Inedible food waste is really easy to recycle. All cooked and uncooked food can go into your food waste bin such as teabags, eggshells and coffee grounds. Almost a quarter of our rubbish is made up of food waste and almost all of that food waste can be recycled.
So what happens with our food waste that is collected? Well, it is recycled and then converted into green energy which is used to power our homes. This reduces the need for non-renewable energy which ultimately helps tackle climate change.
Around 80% of people living in Wales use their food recycling services, but that doesn’t mean everybody is recycling everything they can.
Over the last six months there is no doubt that during lockdown we were consuming more food than ever with the children home from school and of course us working from home too. We had more food waste than normal so recycling became a priority in our home. This is why it’s more important than its ever been before to make sure all food waste is being recycled. If we all make a bigger effort to recycle everything that we can we will make the world a better place for our children and generations to follow. That is what we are trying to do as a family. So let’s recycle more and properly and let’s make Wales the number one country for recycling in the world.
