[AD] How To Keep Grass Green And Achieve A Healthy Lawn

April 25, 2020

The grass is always greener on the other side, did I hear you say? Well, sometimes this old idiom actually describes the truth.

When you bought your house, you probably imagined that your garden would remain carpeted with lush grass all-year-round without needing much more upkeep than just running the lawnmower over it a few times a year. The reality for many homeowners, however, can be very different. Patchy spots, uneven growth and discolouration are common problems which can be difficult to remedy for those who are not up to speed with the ins and outs of good lawn care

Luckily for you, we have put together this helpful guide on how to keep your lawn looking as fresh as the rest of your property.

  1. Aerate

With heavy use down the years, the soil underneath your grass will gradually become compacted. Compacted soil restricted the flow of water and air that the grass needs to stay healthy. To remedy this, all you have to do is area your lawn by regularly punching holes in the surface using a garden fork.

  1. Use Natural Fertilisers and Herbicides

Blitzing your lawn with chemical fertilisers and herbicides may yield immediate results, but it risks compromising the long-term quality of your soil. A much cheaper and more environmentally-friendly way get the same results is to throw down a bit of corn gluten meal instead. As well as preventing weeds from growing, it also has the corollary effect of naturally fertilising your soil.

  1. Change Your Watering Routine

When diagnosing lawn problems for clients, lawn experts commonly find that lawn owners are using substandard watering routines. Many lawn owners begin to overwater their lawns in the mistaken belief that the grass is not growing well because it is thirsty. Watering your grass too much can swamp it and negatively affect the health of the grass.

  1. “Grass-cycling”

Every time you cut your grass and remove the clippings, the soil underneath loses a bit of its mineral richness. A great way to add lustre to your lawn is simply to take off the back off your mower and allow it to spread the grass clipping over the surface of your lawn. This will then recycle the nutrients and act as a natural fertiliser.

  1. Call in the Experts

If all else fails and you are still looking enviously over your fence wondering how your neighbour manages to keep their lawn so verdantly green, take a trip over to have a chat with the people at Musturf Lawn & Turf. Their experts will be able to quickly diagnose the problem and point you toward the right lawn treatment, which will transform your garden into the envy of the whole neighbourhood.

Maintaining a lawn is not rocket science, but it can still be pretty frustrating if you can’t seem to hit on the right formula. Nonetheless, if you follow a process of trial and error using a combination of the strategies listed above, you should have a luscious lawn ready for this summer.
