If you have a family, a family car becomes somewhat of an essential. Sure, you can get to where you need by taking the bus, train or other public transport. These options can be great – low cost, no maintenance and environmentally friendly. But when you’ve got little ones in tow, it can be a whole lot easier to skip the rush hours of commuters squeezing into carriages and clip them into your own vehicle instead. You can go from A to B, door to door. You can rely a little more on timings, factoring in potential traffic and making sure you’re rarely late. You also needn’t worry about the embarrassment of trying to calm sudden tantrums to save the ears of fellow commuters. But buying a car can feel like quite a large decision to make. There are so many decisions to make and so many factors to consider in order to secure a set of wheels that perfectly suits you and your family’s needs.

Keeping Costs Low

First and foremost, you’re going to need to set yourself a budget. This will ensure that you don’t end up facing financial trouble going forward. Of course, driving is bound to be relatively expensive. Cars tend to be the second biggest investment people make in their lives! So, make sure that you work out any costs attached to a vehicle before you make any purchases or sign any contracts. Start by figuring out the cost of the vehicle itself. You will have to see how much it will cost outright or Work out how much a loan would cost. Next, you need to consider additional costs. This can include tax, insurance, maintenance and how much it costs to run in fuel.

Prioritise Space

Next, you need to start considering what type of vehicle you want. A major factor in whether a car is family appropriate or not is space. The amount of room in care is going to determine whether it’s realistic or not. Sports cars, while appealing, don’t often suit family life. Three doors, while cheaper, can prove tricky when it comes to getting little ones in and out – particularly babies in baby seats. In general, you’re going to want as spacious a vehicle as possible, preferably with five doors for the sake of convenience. Think forward into the future rather than just in the present. If you have a partner and two kids, a four seater may well be fine. But might you be having any more kids in the near future? If you are, you may be better off getting a five seater or seven seater now to save yourself having to sell your car and buy a new one soon. Also consider boot space. People tend to underestimate this, but it comes in useful for food shopping or when you’re travelling and you all have luggage.
