[AD] Removing Rubbish From Our Home During Lockdown

During the last four months of lockdown like many people I have been at home more than I would have been under normal circumstances. What that has meant is that many of the jobs around our home that I generally just put off due to a lack of time, I have started getting them all sorted. This in turn has left me with the job of getting rid of a lot of rubbish.

When I started looking around my home I discovered that I was definitely becoming a hoarder and I was quite simply collecting rubbish that I know I should have thrown away at the time, but so often I would put it into the garage or the shed with the intention of throwing it away later, which of course you never do.

Here are two jobs that I wanted to complete through lockdown that required me to throw away a lot of rubbish.

1. Garage

The garage in our home has become the dumping ground for anything that was no longer required in the house and it quite simply got to the point where it was getting difficult to even get in the garage to even get my bike out for my daily bike ride.

It’s quite a long garage and over a long period of just dumping rubbish which could be anything from a broken washing machine to lots of cardboard boxes and lots of old toys that my twin girls no longer play with.

To clean out the garage I decided the best way forward was to hire a man with a van. That way I can get it all sorted and ready on the driveway and I can get a complete rubbish clearance on the day. While browsing the internet I came across a company called Clearabee. You simply book online and a man with a van will turn up and do all your rubbish clearance.

2. Garden

Our garden like many other people’s gardens are neglected through the winter months and the rubbish builds up in different areas and also all of the bushes and shrubs were in desperate need of cutting back.

One job that I wanted get done before summer was upon us was that I wanted to create a patio area to the rear of the garden as a sun terrace for late evening. This meant that I would be digging up quite a lot of turf. It was something that would take a period of time to do so I was going to need a way of throwing away the turf as I did the job. After looking around on the internet I came across a company called SKIPBAG that supply rubbish removal bags. What I loved about the service they offer is that you pick the size of the rubbish bag you want. It’s sent out as a flat pack via the post and you fill it up and then arrange for it to be picked up. This is perfect as I could then fill it gradually and once it was full I could arrange for pick-up of the bag and delivery of a new skip bag to continue my garden project for the summer.

As we begin to get back to some sort of normality I have some plans for some home renovations that will also create quite a bit of rubbish.

Our kitchen is in desperate need of replacing. It’s about 10 years old and has definitely seen better days so I’m looking to do a complete re-fit and I’m planning on re-designing the total outlay of the kitchen. Our kitchen has become very outdated and very tired looking. My plan is to give the kitchen a modern clean finish that will be perfectly suited to family life.

I will be doing all the work myself which means that I will have a lot of old kitchen units to get rid of. I will be hiring rubbish removal bags to make sure I can continue with the renovation of my kitchen and it’s always clear of any rubbish that would get in my way.

Another part of our home that has become very obvious to me through lockdown that is in desperate need of renovation is our bedroom. When we moved it had fitted wardrobes and draws to three sides of the bedroom. This of course reduces the size of the bedroom quite considerably.

My plan is to remove all of the fitted wardrobes and units. I will then fit new wardrobes and units, but only to two sides of the bedroom. I hope this will give it a more of an open feel and create quite a bit more space in our bedroom.

Again I will be doing all the work myself which means I will have the job of disposing of the old wardrobes. I intend to remove all the old wardrobes and arrange for a man with a van to come and collect it all at the same time, leaving me with a blank canvas to create our new modern bedroom.

After four months of lockdown and being at home for long periods of time it has definitely given me the opportunity and the time to get the house and garden in much better condition. It has also allowed me to get rid of the rubbish that I have been hoarding in cupboards around the house, in the garage and in-fact just about everywhere.
