Am I wrapping my four year old twins in cotton wool?

April 4, 2016

We live in an ever increasing dangerous world and everyday I see something in the news that makes me worry about our four year old twins.

Nowadays I seem to be on more frequent occasions looking out for the dangers of everyday life and this here is my list of things that I get paranoid about.
1. The most obvious one is crossing the road and of course we have taught them to look both ways and make sure no cars are coming, but the truth is they have no understanding of the speed a car can go and roads are so busy today with plenty of maniacs out there that it only takes a split second for an accident to happen.
2. As the girls are getting older their independence is starting to come out. This means when we’re out with them somewhere they sometimes like to walk on their own, but be sure of one thing I’m only one step behind them at all times.
3. Where we live we have a long driveway along side our home which is gated at the end, but runs back into our back garden. M loves to scoot from our back garden all the way to the gates. Unfortunately you can’t see right up the driveway from the garden, so every time M scoots down the drive I always step out a little so I can see her. My fear is that somebody could snatch her. I know it’s unlikely, but you never know.

4. We encourage and teach our children to be polite and if somebody says hello or good morning etc they should reply, but for me the minute that person starts to make more conservation it worries me. Why would you? You don’t know them or us.
5. We will be going on a summer holiday this year and for me there are so many times when something could happen. The girls can wander off because they are curious and at an airport you have so many things to arrange that for a split second you could be distracted and turn around they are gone.

Today’s world is a fantastic place to be living in, but it has dangers that simply weren’t there years ago and there are times when I feel I am wrapping the girls in cotton wool, but it’s my fear and paranoia of something terrible happening to them. Although it’s unlikely because yes I know it’s a rare occurrences.
I just want to love and protect them from the evils of today.
Would love to know your thoughts.
