An ageing parent

December 3, 2015

My mother had me late in life so I guess it  would seem logical that I would become a major part of her carer regime.

As she has got older her health has deteriorated and now she has a number of conditions that will never go away.

I don’t always show it, but I do have great sympathy that she has led a very active life which has come to an abrupt end, Many days pass by without her seeing anybody, but me.
When you get to a certain age it’s interesting that your best friend is the television and for my mum it must be incredibly boring.

She has all but given up driving which took away her last bit of independence but in all honesty I believe she was probably a danger to herself and other road users.
One of the most difficult things to watch is how she finds it difficult to deal with getting older because she simply doesn’t accept it.
My mums life is a never ending list of hospital appointments, some short stays in hospital and at home for a vast majority of the time on her own, but she comes to us for Sunday dinner most weeks.
I do her weekly shop, sort all her finances out and basically anything she needs and I really don’t have a problem with any of it although she always says she feels like a burden. She’s a drama queen on occasion but she has always been that, but never a burden.
I see so many elderly people who never see their family, but this will never happen with my mum after all she brought me up the very least I can do is look after her in her twilight years.

I can't relate to your post. My Dad passed away in July after a series of health issues. Mom is dealing with the loss of her husband of 56 years as well as her own health issues. The hardest part for both of them was asking for help after a lifetime of independence. It's great to see you are looking after your Mom.
