Angle Irons: What Are They, and How to Use Them?

October 19, 2023

Many people will go through their entire lives without hearing the term “angle irons.” You might also get into a profession where you encounter and use them daily. But what are angle irons, and what are their uses?

We will talk about the angle iron and its uses in the following article. It’s good to know about them, even if you never get into an industry that uses them. That’s because the chances are good that there are angle irons close to you right now if you’re inside any modern building.

What Does the Term Angle Iron Mean?

An angle iron is a common type of construction material. If you speak to someone in the construction industry, they will likely know what you’re talking about immediately.

Angle irons are metal cross-sections that resemble the letter “L.” There is a shorter section attached at a 90-degree angle to a larger one. You can find them in many sizes, and they are typically made of steel.

What Industries Use Angle Irons?

We mentioned the construction industry. Most modern buildings are built using angle irons, so it makes sense that construction and this kind of building material would go together.

However, there are some other industries and niches where you might run into angle irons. If you work selling or making furniture, you will likely see angle irons in your job. That is because angle irons go into several pieces of furniture to stabilise them, such as beds, cabinets, and dressers.

What is the Best Use of an Angle Iron?

There are several practical uses of angle irons, but the rule of thumb is that you use one when you want to stabilise something. An angle iron will usually go into an object’s base. The unique shape and balance of these pieces of steel make it much less likely that the object will collapse as you start to build it higher and higher.

For instance, let’s say you’re going to start on a construction project. Maybe you’re laying the groundwork for a bridge that’s going to connect two parcels of land that are some distance away from each other.

If so, you would lay down angle irons as part of that bridge’s base. The irons will give you the stability you need if you want to be sure the bridge will last a long time.

How Else Can You Use Them?

You might also use angle irons if you were making a scaffolding. You might need it for a construction project, and you do not want it to collapse. If it collapses, your workers might be hurt, and you can avoid that if you use angle irons in the scaffolding’s base.

You can use angle irons if you want to build a tower that will have many stories. The largest skyscrapers will have angle irons in their bases.

Now that you know about angle irons, you should feel good knowing they’re nearby, holding up buildings, in the furniture throughout your home, and elsewhere.
