Blogging, Family and Friends 

I’m sure lots of us have experienced this at one time or another. I certainly have. 

When you possibly mention to family and friends that you have a blog, I always laugh at the confused look that I am confronted with and then you get one or a few standard replies.

They may say yes I have heard about them blogs and that’s quickly followed by, I don’t really understand them. 

So you try to explain what it is and they look at you as if they are fully understandable and then say so you just write things? I reply with yes that’s right. Well, what’s the point in that? That’s what I usually hear back.

At that point I give up and really can’t be bothered trying to explain any further and will usually say it’s a hobby. I normally feel dismissed at that point as the conversation moves to far more important issues like the weather and how cold it’s been.

The second kind of response I receive is usually, oh I know blogs! That’s where you get loads of free stuff, and that’s followed by I should start a blog for all the free stuff. 

Of course if they only knew how much hard work goes into reviewing items, promoting them and actually writing a post that is acceptable to the company you are working for, maybe then they would realise it’s not free. In fact quite often it’spoor pay. I’m sure if they realised this, they wouldn’t be so quick to start a blog. 

Both my wife and I blog. I personally think we we work very hard to make both the blogs very successful, although I have always found it difficult to gauge success. 

I have now finally given up trying to explain to family and friends because it seems they ask totally ridiculous questions such as what is it? Why is it called DIY Daddy? What’s that to do with you? What’s an online diary? All these questions after I have explained exactly what a blog is. It’s hugely frustrating and I feel like pulling my hair out. 

I have now come to the conclusion that it is impossible to talk about my hobby of blogging to certain family and friends so I stick to blogging friends online or my wife for chats about blogging. I actually believe if you don’t blog, you simply don’t understand which can sometimes border obsession and be very addictive. 

Blogging is without question an unusual hobby, but trying to explain it to somebody that’s never heard of blogging is impossible.
