Chocolate Tool Box Awards 2019 Funny DIY Disasters With Hoppy At Home Competition #AD

When you buy your first home it’s an expensive time. If you’re anything like me you’ll try to do all those DIY jobs around the home yourself. This can so often end in disaster because you don’t have the right tools or quite honestly the ability or experience to complete a particular DIY job. This can so easily end up with you having to call in the experts to put your DIY disaster right. Of course this can end up costing you twice as much.

Looking back over the years I have had my fair share of DIY disasters and although not funny at the time when I look back, I find them incredibly funny and wonder what on earth made me think I could take on certain DIY jobs.

I’ve recently teamed up with Hoppy, the number 1 free home management website that can find a trusted tradesperson for any of those DIY jobs you need doing around the home.

My one everlasting DIY disaster that will always be at the front front of my memory is when I bought my first ever home. The property needed a total renovation as it had been neglected over the years. Many of the jobs that needed doing I brought in the experts for and one of those particular jobs was to have a new kitchen fitted. Once it was fitted and finished that just left me to decorate it. On the one wall near the door was a radiator and I wanted to paper the wall to get a perfect finish. I decided in my wisdom that I would remove the radiator to decorate. Simple right? Haha! Well if you’ve done it before it would have been. I had never removed a radiator in my life, but it’s not difficult. You just disconnect the water pipes and lift it off. The problem started because I never thought for one minute that I would need to isolate the water running to the radiator!

So I removed the bolts holding the pipes that the water flowed through to the radiator and an element of water started to leak out. I thought it was just excess water coming out of the radiator. Then out of the blue the pipe popped off, this was caused by the water pressure, and suddenly I had a six foot fountain of water going all over my lovely new kitchen. Panic set in quickly and the floor of my kitchen very quickly was turning into a swimming pool. I remember vividly getting buckets, saucepans and in fact just about anything to catch the water. I even went as far as putting my finger in the pipe to stop it which actually caused my fountain to get even higher and of course totally soaked me. It was a DIY disaster of the first order!

I eventually managed to stop the water and everything was absolutely soaked. I had about three inches of water on the kitchen floor. It wasn’t very funny at the time but when I think about it now I laugh a lot about the panic I was in and the fact that I looked like a drowned rat. Of course it taught me an important lesson and that’s to call the experts in when you are not sure.

This is exactly where Hoppy are invaluable. It really is the one stop home management website. Whether it’s changing your broadband or finding a trusted tradesmen to do those jobs you can’t do, as the saying goes “If you can’t fix it Hoppy can”.

As I have said I have teamed up with Hoppy and they are running a social media campaign called the “Hoppy Chocolate Toolbox Awards”. So what’s it all about? Well, let me tell you.

Hoppy would like people to share their funny DIY disaster stories and include a photo (PHOTO IS OPTIONAL) on social media. There has to be some many funny stories about how a DIY job has turned into a disaster. It could be something as simple a putting a shelf up and then looking at your handiwork with pride only to watch it fall down because you used the wrong raw plugs, or of course it could be something more disastrous such as my experience of removing a radiator. I can’t wait to see what funny DIY disasters you have had.

  1. I remember the kitchen I put in the first flat that I owned. It had metal joists behind one of the walls which stopped me from attaching one of the wall mounted cupboards. Not to be beaten by this, I used a whole tube of ‘no more nails’ and stuck it to the wall. It was still there many years later, when I sold the property…

  2. I’m sure it was awful at the time but your DIY disaster sounds very funny now, especially where you tried to make the water stop coming out of the pipe and it just went higher. Sounds like something DIY Dan would do on Gigglebiz! #ThatFridayLinky
