Dads Who Play Barbie

February 17, 2017

I was recently approached by Mattel, the makers of Barbie, to take part in their #DadsWhoPlayBarbie campaign. This campaign celebrates the magic of the father-daughter relationship. In the campaign video six real dads are shown playing Barbie with their daughters, and how time spent in her imaginary world is an investment in her real world.

This campaign is supported by global research finding that strong male advocates empower girls, and that two thirds of UK Dads believe that joining in their daughter’s playtime helps build their self-confidence.

Our five year old twins already own lots of different Barbie dolls. Is it just me that feels as though Barbie has been around forever? In truth, they have and they’re just as popular now, if not more popular, than when they were first released.

I grew up in an age when it was frowned upon for boys to be seen playing with dolls. We were only allowed to play with stereotypical boys toys. That all changed for me when I had twin girls, because if I wanted to get involved in their games I knew I’d have to play Barbie with them. It was a bit strange to begin with as I’d never played with Barbie dolls before. When playing Barbie with my girls, I actually found it quite enlightening and freeing to be able to create these imaginary, role-play games with Barbie. The girls certainly have fantastic imaginations, and they loved having me play too!

Dads Who Play Barbie
As mentioned above, Mattel say that time spent in her imaginary world is an investment in her real world, and I couldn’t agree more! When a girl plays with barbie she imagines everything she can become. The world is now open to all girls and women to be whatever they want to be in life, without any restrictions, which is something I believe we can teach our girls from an early age. By doing this they’ll feel that they can do anything they set their minds too.

Dads Who Play Barbie
Mattel kindly sent me a Barbie You Can Be Anything Box full of Barbie goodies to celebrate #DadsWhoPlayBarbie. The box included a range of new 2017 Barbie’s including empowering new careers, the diverse new shape Fashionistas and athlete dolls. I love the new more diverse body shape as well as the athlete dolls. It’s all about the 21st century showing that women are achieving anything and everything in what was once a male dominated field.

They now have a Barbie footballer with movable joints. Of course she’s not limited to just being a footballer as R quickly said that she was also a skateboarder who did martial arts! I have to say that the footballer was R’s favourite! She’s obsessed with football and seeing a Barbie as a footballer, well, I think she was a little bit awe struck!

Dads Who Play Barbie
They also have a Barbie pop star showing that she can sing, dance, travel the world and write their own songs. The Fashionista dolls have said goodbye to the tiny waist, and they’re more like real life with fuller figures. I think this is great as size zero is not the norm and certainly not the example I would want my five year old twin girls. My other twin daughter, M, took an immediate liking the pop star doll, because she is forever walking around singing and dancing like a pop star!

The fashionistas range is very comprehensive and every Barbie is very different in shape and size which is more like the real world.

Spending time with my five year old twin girls, playing games with them with Barbie and being involved in their imaginary world is something that we all really enjoyed. It gave us the chance to dream up lots of imaginary scenarios and I felt that it brought us closer together.

Barbies will give your little ones an opportunity to make up and develop an unlimited amount of stories. You can see how I got on playing with their new range of Barbies with my girls in my video below, although both the girls had to teach me how to speak like Barbie!

I would love to know how many other dads play Barbie. Do you?

I don’t play barbie yet as Bella is only 1 but when the time comes I’ll be down on the floor giving it socks. Nothing beats good old fashioned (or fashionista’d in this case 😜) hands on play and attention with your kids.

Not only did my dad play Barbie with me, but he was my manicure and pedicurist as well. He had steady hands and never got polish on my skin. It really does make a difference in a girl’s adult relationships. #ThatFridayLinky

Well, I certainly have played similar! Just a part of being a dad in my opinion. Great to see a footballer is now part of the range. Thanks for hosting #thatfridaylinky

This is a great idea! I was a tom boy growing up so I would be out in the garden with my pops playing football, but I do remember him playing with my hairdresser head with me! I love the footballer Barbie I would of had that one for sure!!
My little girl is only 1 but I’m sure when the time comes the hubby will have his own Barbie collection to bring out at playtime!

I don’t, however, if Chase wanted a Barbie at some point in the future, I can’t see a reason to say no. It’s al about allowing our children to explore the world around them, and if that means playing with a Doll, I can’t see it being an issue. Great post! #thatfridaylinky

Fidget (nearly 5) has me playing with lots of her dolls. She loves Barbie. It’s not a problem for me either. However, she’s just seen the Barbie camper van and wants it for her birthday in March. It’s got a slide! Barbie: all good in our house.

On the flip side, as a mum to a son, I play a lot of what would be stereotyped as ‘boy games’. So glad Barbie is introducing footballers etc. to their collection. Great blog #ThatLinkyFriday

  • Then We Were Four

    February 17, 2017 at 10:16 am

The other day we were in a toy shop and my eldest son pointed at an Ariel figure from ‘The Little Mermaid’ and he said “That’s Ariel, that’s a girls toy”- I was actually shocked that he’d picked up this attitude because it isn’t one we have ever encouraged, so I said “No, it’s for whoever wants to play with it”. We brought home a set of fairy figures that day.

A toy that encourages imaginative play is a good toy as far as I am concerned, be it pink, blue, yellow or otherwise. #ThatFridayLinky

Great post. I have 2 boys but the gender specific toy think irritates me…Oliver is for every buying girly magazines…all he sees is a toy phone the fact it’s pink doesn’t come into it! #thatfridaylinky

My oldest daughter is 18 and my youngest is 10 and I have been playing Barbie for years. Nothing like sitting down and opening up the 6 massive tote bins full of Barbie stuff and letting our minds take us away. My 7 year old son plays with me and his sisters as well. Sometimes Superheros join in as once we all get going you never know what will happen. The way Barbie has helped expand my kids imagination over the years has been amazing. All dads should be on the floor playing Barbie or what ever else with their kids.

Hubby will play this with the grem but he has waaaay less patience for the make believe games so I end up doing those with her more. It’s a fab campaign though and all toys should be able to be played by all xx Thanks for hosting x

Awesome post Nige! Mattel this campaign is brilliant and I’m glad dads are being highlighted! That’s just one of those special qualities you need as a dad. That uncanny ability to convert any of your children’s toys to an imaginary voice and play! We personally don’t have any babies yet because Charlotte is too small although we have our fair share of our little pony and little people figures! Daddy taking the voice of many as we have playtime! Thanks for sharing Nige! I’ll share later on twitter as that’s when it will do best! Cheers Mate!

I love how Barbie has evolved from the picture perfect woman to a woman who could be anything she wants to be! and I love how the dolls arent dressed in stereotypical “womens roles”
I also have no issue with dads playing dolls with their girls – or boys! I know the past has said its not for boys to play with dolls; but isnt that what Action Man and GI Joe are? #thatfridaylinky

You’re such a fab Daddy Nige, I really love this review. I don’t remember my Dad ever playing Barbie with me, infact I’m sure that he didn’t, and for that reason I always encourage my husband to play Barbies with the girls. They have so many dolls they don’t know what to do with them, and a deluxe Barbie mansion, they could literally play for hours – and so could I!! #thatfridaylinky

Wow, it has been quite a few years since I saw a barbie and boy have they changed and for the better. All of my barbies were skinny and blonde so it is great to see how they have evolved.
Jessica is only a baby at the minute and so there are no barbies here yet (I am a little excited for when she can get them) but I know that Sam will be on the floor playing with her, just as I play cars with Reuben.
We are very much a toy is a toy rather than being gender specific! #thatfridaylinky

Hats off to all the dads who play dolls with their daughters (and mums – like me – who play cars and superheroes with their sons hahaha). Great post, and so important for us as role models to not box things as being “for girls” or “for boys”…

I love that the makers of Barbie listened to the concerns of parents and have made these changes to the dolls. Girls no longer simply aspire to be thin and pretty. Good for you for getting involved in playtime with your girls. It teaches them that they don’t have to adhere to gender stereotypes. #ThatFridayLinky
