Empty Nest Syndrome Solutions

November 7, 2019

Are you approaching the moment when the kids have flown the nest, leaving you with more spare time on your hands? We all know they have to leave eventually and, on paper, the prospect of the washing basket one day being empty, no muddy boots left strewn around the hall and not having a food bill the size of a small country, is very appealing. But the reality of empty-nest syndrome is real, and all those left behind can struggle with those moments. Here’s a few ideas of some hobbies you might want to give a go, to fill the hours you once spent doing everyone else’s washing up.

Home Brewing

No longer thought of as lethal moonshine, brewed in a bath, home brewing is fast becoming one of the most popular past times. One of the crucial first steps is ensuring you have everything you need and for this, try checking out Wido. You can also indulge in a research trip, sampling beers and deciding that notes and flavors you most enjoy that you can recreate at home. Many breweries also offer tours and tasting classes, so you can go and pick up tips and tricks from the experts before creating your own recipe. You can use your own name to create a unique label for your beer, or there are plenty of name generators available that you can look to for inspiration – the choice is yours!

Leather Work

Sometimes it’s good to have a side hustle – whether or not it’s something that brings in any cash (and if it does, that’s a bonus), a little business you can run alongside your day-to-day chores and activities works wonders to stay busy and active. Leather work is a restorative craft, requiring an eye for detail and an artistic flair. Don’t be off-put by this though – there are many stencils and templates you can find for free online, all of which will inspire you to create your own leather work. Not only can you handmake gifts for friends and family members, but the craft itself is relaxing and calming. Unlike many other hobbies, you don’t need a huge space or lots of different tools and gadgets to get started, just a few simple bits and pieces and you’re ready to start making anything from wallets to waistcoats!

Blogging

This had to have a mention and, whether you use your blog to log the journey you’ve taken with your new-found hobbies, or simply record your thoughts on everyday life, an online blog can be an excellent way to share insights and experience with the rest of the world. Try having a theme which runs through your blog – it can be general – DIY, walks in the woods, or even a short review of a book you’ve read that week. Something which ties your posts together will encourage people with similar interests and experiences to discover and enjoy your writing. You can always expand and do one-off blogs about other topics as you go along.

You could even write your first blog about exploring a new interest after your children have flown the nest!
