Enjoying Safe Family Travels This Summer
With restrictions finally being to ease Following lockdown, it’s possible to start travelling once more. As the summer holidays haven’t officially begun yet, this gives you some time to start thinking about where you’d like to go and what you’d like to do with your family this year.
While it’s still important to follow social distancing guidelines, there are things you can do to travel safely. After months at being at home, it will be a welcome change to venture further afield and help boost the economy while you’re at it.
Here are some useful tips for enjoying safe family travels this summer.

Make the most of visiting friends and family
After spending such a long time being unable to visit friends and family, it’ll be good to go and spend time with your loved ones. While there are still social distancing guidelines to observe, you can meet with people outdoors and make the most of the sun together. As things ease further and indoor visits, etc. are allowed – why not make plans to stay with family and friends across the country and make up for some lost time?
Enjoy exploring the UK
If you’re unsure about travelling abroad this year, then why not make the most of the UK instead? The economy will need to get back on its feet, and local tourism is one way to do this. Check out some of the best places to visit in the UK and plan some trips – all you need is a camping tent! Self-catering accommodation and hotels are beginning to open their doors again too, so you’ll have plenty of options for places to stay.
Staying in the UK will make it easier to follow official guidance, and you won’t need to think about insurance and healthcare as you would if you were planning an overseas visit!
Plan some cool road trips
There are plenty of amazing places you can visit for day trips in the UK, and with visitor attractions reopening, you can have some fun days out with all of the family.
Before planning any big car journey, make sure your car is raring to go. You’ll need some emergency supplies to keep in the boot (including plenty of water in case you break down on a hot day!), while spare tyres can help make sure you can set off again quickly if you suffer some kind of puncture. An emergency breakdown kit is always good for road trips and general driving, so make sure you have everything you need.
Do your research before you travel abroad
Travel restrictions have eased so that you can now travel abroad if you wish. Some countries have been able to combat COVID-19 quicker than others, and many are open for business as usual. The latest Government travel advice can help you understand where you can go and how to travel safely.
If you do decide to travel abroad, make sure it’s a decision the whole family is comfortable with. One the one hand, there will be some great deals to take advantage of at the moment, but on the other, you might not want to go away on holiday knowing you won’t be able to fully relax.
Don’t take risks
Now is not the time for taking risks. While things are on the up, we’re not out of the woods yet. If you’re unsure about anything, check guidelines first. The UK Government has its own set of guidelines, but you should follow specific guidelines for Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland if that’s where you live or are planning to travel to.
Whether you stay home or you decide to travel, make sure you follow all of the available guidance and advice. If you’re unsure or don’t want to take unnecessary risks, stay home.
Try some new adventures at home
We’ve been fortunate to have some great weather so far this year, and hopefully that will continue. Summer has barely begun so there’s still plenty of time to enjoy the good weather with your family.
If you haven’t already, why not spend some time doing up your garden? You can have fun creating an outdoor living space, adding a hot tub or paddling pool and get some games going in the garden.
While garden furniture has been difficult to get hold of recently, it’s starting to come back into stock, helping you create some cool spaces to relax in. Just don’t forget some garden furniture covers – you never know when the weather might turn on the UK!
Some other ideas for things you can do at home include creating a garden cinema or building your own teepee! There are still plenty of things you could do at home to entertain the family and make the most of spending some time together.
Remember, there’s always next year
While this year has affected everyone in some way, it’s important not to get too down by it all. Plans and holidays may have been cancelled, but it’s also been great to take a step back and spend some time with your family. Remember, there’s always next year to take trips and go travelling, and you’ll enjoy it all the more for having waited! Keep doing what you’re doing and hopefully things will brighten up soon.
It’s been a strange time, and remains to be, with ‘normal’ life still looking far off, but there have definitely been some positive sides to lockdown too. Being able to spend time with your family is something that can be rare between busy work and social lives, and perhaps it’s something you’ll aim to do more of in the future. Planning some family adventures for the summer will give you something to look forward to, and who knows what next and exciting places you will discover! Whether you stay at home or decide to venture further afield, remember to stay safe and enjoy yourselves.
