Father's Day

May 24, 2016
Father’s Day is fast approaching and I am very fortunate that my five children will make a fuss of me in their own way and if I am honest a text to wish me happy Father’s Day would be more than enough.

At the end of last year my father passed away and this year has got me thinking that for most of my life I never got to say happy Father’s Day. It’s only really dawned on me this year because he is no longer here.

I have to be honest with myself there was never really a father/son relationship of any consequence, certainly not in the same way that I have experienced and had with my own children. The sadness is that I got to see him on the day he passed away and this was for the first time in 15 years so this kind of explains the poor relationship that existed, or didn’t exist between us.
I suppose I have missed out on making a Father’s Day card in school. Which I have been fortunate to recieve and still recieve from my children, but it must also be said that there are many children in the world without their fathers in their lives, just like it was for me. Maybe this is something that should be stopped to save the feelings of said children.
It has left me with a very low expectation of Father’s Day to the point where it feels strange that my children would want to make a fuss of me. Although the lack of a father figure in my life left me with some positive effects. This is a very negative one.
I guess what it is, is that although I am all grown up and a father myself it would have been nice to say happy Father’s Day.

I will enjoy the day with all my children, but a little thought will be there. What if.
