Father Of The Bride: Everything The Proud Papa Needs To Know

Dad’s or even granddad’s who are giving their daughters away are often confused about how much they’re expected to do. When all their not-so-little girl is looking for is love, support and encouragement plus a little financial assistance when it comes to planning the wedding of her dreams.

Wedding Day Logistics

Chances are if you and your daughter are close then you’ll be involved with the planning right from the off. Organising a wedding isn’t easy, so she’ll probably ask for your help with the budget, sourcing vendors, cars, and printing out information packets. Not to mention collecting orders of service for guests, assisting in planning the big day timetable as well as being a general figure of advice.

When it comes to deciding what aspects should be done professionally, versus what you can do yourselves consider the skills involved. You may not see the point in a bespoke wedding invitation design, but if your daughter has a busy job, she may not have time to do them all herself. Remember, it’s her and her groom’s wedding so even though you might disagree with something it is their decision.

Walking Down The Aisle

It’s one of the longest walk’s of any woman’s life, so it’s important that she knows she has you there to lean on, both physically and emotionally. Make sure you attend the rehearsal a few days before the wedding, so everyone knows where they’re supposed to sit, what the running order is and have the opportunity to iron out any last minute issues. Traditionally, the bride goes on her father’s right, they walk in together then, once at the front, he’s asked to give her away before sitting down in the front row.

Finding The Words

It’s the moment you get to share with everyone just how amazing your daughter is. Your speech should contain some sweet, genuinely touching stories from her childhood, talk about her career or life accomplishments as well as have a few funny comments about her new husband before welcoming him to the family. Make sure you thank everyone for coming and that you’ve all got a glass of champagne before toasting to the bride and groom!

To Dance Or Not To Dance?

Not everyone has a father/ daughter dance, but it is a lovely way to find time to speak to each other away from everyone. Some brides like their fathers to pick the song they’ll dance to while others prefer to keep that particular moment as a surprise. Don’t feel like you need a slow, sappy number like ‘I loved her first’ talk to your daughter about what she’d like and think about who you are as people. If you hummed rock songs as lullabies when she was little then an instrumental version of your favourite anthem might be more appropriate.

Last Man Standing

Typically, the dads are the last to leave having thanked all the guests for coming and settled up any outstanding vendor payments. They’ll also box up leftover food, or wedding cake and arrange to return to clear away decorations. The father of the bride also takes responsibility for wedding cards and presents making sure they’re transported safely back home.
