Finding Happiness and Balance While Raising Children

October 12, 2023

Raising children, whether they are your own children or foster children, is immensely rewarding. You get the pleasure of guiding these little people through childhood and watching them become happy, well-adjusted adults. Often, though, it is hard to pinpoint the good times when you are surrounded by chaos and have fifty million things to do before bedtime. But fear not, we have some tips to help you achieve balance and find your happy place as a parent or foster carer.

Take Care of Yourself

With so many things to think about, it is easy for parents to neglect their own needs. However, it is important to remember that taking care of yourself is not selfish but rather essential for maintaining happiness and balance. Set aside some time each day for at least one thing you do purely for yourself, such as reading a chapter of a book or watching an episode of your favourite reality TV show. You can do this while the kids play or take care of homework. Or in the case of reading, go to bed half an hour earlier and read in peace.

It’s OK to Ask for Support

Parenting can sometimes feel overwhelming, but no one is expected to do it alone. Support from partners, family members, friends, or parenting communities can provide an invaluable network of understanding and guidance. Have honest conversations and share your experiences. Advice from people you trust can offer fresh perspectives and remind you that you’re not alone.

If you are a foster carer, reach out to other foster carers and take part in any social events organised by your foster agency. If fostering in Blackpool is something you’d like to do, look at your options. It’s a way to give something back once your own children are older or you have time to care for a child.

Have Realistic Expectations

Parents often place unrealistic expectations on themselves, striving for perfection in every aspect of their parenting journey, fuelled by social media posts that show parenting as being wonderful 100% of the time. However, it is important to understand social media content is heavily curated and no one is perfect; parenting is a learning process filled with ups and downs.

Setting realistic expectations and embracing imperfections lifts some of the pressure and creates a more relaxed atmosphere for both parents and children. Celebrate the small victories and focus on the positive aspects of parenting rather than obsessing over your perceived inadequacies.

Create Boundaries and Balance

Balancing the demands of parenting with personal and professional obligations can be challenging. Establishing clear boundaries is important. Create a schedule that includes dedicated family time, alone time, and quality time with a partner, so all essential bits of your life are nurtured. By respecting these boundaries and finding a healthy balance, parents can avoid burnout and foster a sense of fulfilment in both their personal and parenting roles.

Raising kids is difficult at times, but by following the tips above, you can make sure you don’t lose all sense of yourself in the process.
