Five Quick and Easy Home Improvements to Brighten up your living space

As a self-employed painter and decorator I’ve been in a lot of peoples homes. I’m always fascinated to see how people decorate their homes and quite often I take inspiration from what I see in other peoples homes and bring them back to replicate in my own home. 


Sometimes, a customer will ask me to do something that I think would never work, but when the job is done, quite often I’m surprised how often an off-the-wall design can work and bring a new kind of vibe to a room. Some home improvements can be pretty drastic, but often the simple changes can help to brighten up your living space. Here are five quick and easy home improvements to brighten up your living space. 


Mirrors


Mirrors are an excellent way to give the impression that a room is bigger than what it actually is. You could opt for one fairly large mirror as a focal point for a room, perhaps hung above a mantel piece or shelf. 

Alternatively, if you’re feeling a bit bolder, you could opt for selection of smaller mirrors, all different sizes and shapes, and cluster them together to give your room an artsy, modern look. Why not choose bold colours such as red and orange or perhaps green and blue?



Plants


Houseplants are a quick and easy way to make a room look brighter. House plants are easy to look after as they require little watering. You can literally buy a plant, pop in front of your fireplace or on your dining table and forget about it! Well, not completely as you will obviously need to water it at some point, but you get the gist!


If plants aren’t your thing, a nice vase of fresh flowers would work just as well, or perhaps from fake flowers or even a fake plant. No-one need ever know!


Cushions


My wife loves cushions. Our sofas and bed are covered in them! Bold purple ones, silvery grey ones and white, frilly ones! They are a really good way to transform a room though. If you purchase some cushions of varying sizes and colours, try them out in different orders and when you get bored, you can swap them from room to room to mix it up a bit!


Art


Wall art is another good way to brighten up a room and it needn’t be expensive. My wife bought a beautiful canvas from an online clothes retailer in the sale and it looks a lot more expensive than the £5 is cost her!


Remember, art isn’ limited to paintings, pictures and canvases. You could also consider some ornaments or perhaps some family snaps or even your kids drawings in a nice frame.


Paint

Changing your colour scheme is quite a popular choice too. Plus it’s fairly cheap. As long as you choose a colour that will compliment your furniture etc then you should be ok. If your current colour scheme is quite bland, magnolia or white perhaps, why not try injecting a splash of colour with a feature wall?
