Glass Around The Home

When I look around my home it never ceases to amaze me how much glass we have in our home. I have on occasion wondered if all the glass we have is safe, especially if it’s a glass door. The reason I want the glass to be safe is because I’m a dad of eight year old twin girls. We all know what children can be like, running around the home at 100mph, slamming doors as they go!

I have recently been going around our home inside and outside to make sure, for instance, that the glass in our half glazed doors are toughened glass cut to size. It’s very important that it’s cut to size perfectly so there is no chance of it breaking or shattering.

Here are some typical parts of the home where glass is used where it should be toughened glass to make sure everybody in the family is safe. Toughened glass can be up to five times stronger than normal float glass which makes it perfect for indoor and outdoor use and can easily divide areas in your home if required.

1. Shower cubicle or screens

Many of us have shower rooms or a shower over the bath and it’s so important that they are fitted with toughened glass so if they are accidentally knocked there is no chance of them breaking or cracking.

2. Glass Shelves

If you have an area in your lounge that you want to make a feature of then toughened glass shelves can add a touch of class and sophistication to your home and will definitely get your family and friends noticing a stunning feature.

3. Staircase

If your hall landing and stairs feel a bit closed in then an absolutely fantastic way to open the area up is to have toughened glass installed below the bannister rail. It really will make the whole area feel more appealing and definitely add character.

4. Outside Balcony

If you are lucky enough to have an outside balcony then toughened glass is a perfect way to add safety and give it a beautiful look. It will also be basically maintenance free. It will only need cleaning with warm soapy water which is a huge bonus. So if you have a balcony that is wooden and needs to be constantly painted maybe it’s time to replace it with toughened glass.

5. Conservatory

If your family is growing then the chances are you may be thinking of extending your home. A fantastic way of extending your home to give you much needed extra room is a conservatory. When you’re deciding on what type of glass to have fitted, I would suggest low e-coated toughened glass. The reason being is that it will reduce the amount of infrared or ultraviolet rays coming through the glass. This is particularly important especially in winter as it will help to keep the heat in and in summertime it will help to keep the conservatory cool.
