[AD] Handy Hints To Tackle Common Plumbing Problems

Most homeowners will find themselves in a situation where they need to call a plumber. While it’s reassuring to have experts at the end of the phone, in some cases, you’ll need to assume the role of first responder. If you have a plumbing problem, being able to employ basic skills can make all the difference. 

Many of us will be familiar with the sound of dripping taps. If your taps are leaking, there’s a good chance that the washer is worn or damaged, and this should be relatively easy to fix. Turn off the water supply, turn on the tap to remove any residual water flow, put the plug in the sink and replace the washer. You can do this by taking the handle off followed by the tap bonnet and the headgear. Once you’ve removed the jumper valve, you can fit the new washer. 

Other common problems you may encounter at home include smelly drains, blocked sinks and water leaks. Follow the pungent odor to try and find a build-up and wash your drains out with plenty of boiling water. Add coarse salt, and if this doesn’t have the desired result, try baking soda, lemon juice or vinegar. If the unpleasant aroma is coming from your sink, repeat the steps listed above to try and clean the drainage system out, and if this doesn’t work, arm yourself with a plunger. You might also need to try using a drainage snake. In the case of leaks, size matters. If water is cascading, turn the water off as soon as possible, take photos of the damage to support your insurance claim, and call a plumber. 

Toilet troubles are something we all want to avoid. Sadly, this is not always possible. If your toilet won’t flush, there are several possible causes, including a broken flush button, reduced water supply or a blockage. You can lift the cistern lid and try and identify the issue, or you could call a plumber to tackle the dirty work. Finally, the problem we dread most in the winter months, a lack of hot water. Check the power supply, look at the water pressure and see if there are any obvious faults. Call your plumber if you can’t get your boiler working again.
