My Covid-19 Silver Linings

April 14, 2020

We have now been in lock down for just over three weeks and I was recently tagged by Emily of Twin Mummy and Daddy to write this post during this period of lock down about any silver linings that have consequently come about that might not have possibly happened.

It’s been interesting over the last few weeks for me because it has definitely given me the time to have occasional moments of surveillance about life in general and how we live our lives. It’s given me, and I imagine many of us, a chance to slow down the speed that we rush through our lives without taking a breath.

There have a been some moments that I have found actually quite interesting that I have previously never thought about.

The first change to my life has been that I became a home teacher to our eight year twin girls. You may wonder why this is a silver lining. Well, it’s because twice a year we go to parents evening to find out how the girls are doing in school, but I have also come away thinking yes they seem fine and are doing well, but the truth is I learn very little about their progress.

When I started teaching the girls at home, almost straight away I had a completely different insight into their abilities and also where their strengths and weaknesses in different subjects became very obvious very quickly to me. This allowed me to help improve their weakness in certain subjects that sometimes might not be noticed in a class of 30 children. I’m also so pleased the way the girls accepted me as their teacher and they treated it as a proper school lesson.

Another silver lining has been that now everyday we all sit down together at the same time to have our meals. There is no late home from work or having to be somewhere else. Now we have a family teatime together everyday and it’s been lovely to sit down and have a conservation while eating. This has been a lovely part of our new routine during lockdown and one that I won’t be letting go once normality returns to our lives.

Something else that has now become a very big part of my daily routine is exercise. We are of course allowed our one hour of daily exercise, so it was perfect timing that at the beginning of the year I started cycling again. It’s the perfect way to blow away the cobwebs and release those happy hormones. It also has massive health benefits especially for me as I suffer from high blood pressure and cycling is a great way to lower your blood pressure. After suffering a stroke a couple of years ago caused by my high blood pressure this has definitely been a silver lining.

My final but easily my biggest silver lining has to be that as a family of four living 24/7 under the same roof is that we have gelled as a unit and for the most part it’s a very harmonious time. We have learnt to respect each other and when one is feeling a bit down one of us will go out of the way to cheer them up. We have formed a bond that I believe is now unbreakable. We have adapted to a very difficult, unusual life in lockdown, but I believe we are making the best of the situation and protecting ourselves and staying safe and well.

What silver linings have you had through this lockdown? I would love to hear in the comments below.

Hey Nige, Thanks for the tag. I have been mulling a post over about this in my head so it’s great to be prompted to actually write it down! I’m the queen of procrastination so this is definite motivation. Take care & regards, to Emily.

    Such a great perspective.
One thing is we take family walks in the afternoons when it’s above freezing.
We never seemed to have time for that before.

There are definitely some upsides to this lockdown – I think it’s lovely you’ve been able to help your girls with their studies. And mealtimes are such an important part of the day. I am seeing things a little differently too now that the shock of it is all over. I am also finding I have a moment to take a breath and press pause for a while #ThatFridayLinky

I think it’s SO important to look for the silver linings because they are there if we look hard enough! #ThatFridayLinky
