Hippo Declares War On Waste Plastics In The Construction Industry

The problems facing the world over the next 5-10 years is climate change. One of the biggest reasons that climate change is a problem is our reliance and use of plastic. This is very prevalent in the construction industry in the UK. 23% of plastic produced in the UK is consumed by the construction industry and 25% of construction packaging waste is plastic. This all means that 3x more packaging waste is produced by the construction industry than all UK households combined. This all means that something needs to change to make the construction industry more environmentally friendly and start operating a sustainable industry

I have been a painter and decorator for over 20 years and I would have absolutely no idea how many plastic tubes of silicone, filler or some other type of product I have used. When I read that as many as 150 million plastic sealant and adhesive cartridges end up on landfill every year I was truly shocked and also disappointed with myself knowing that I have been contributing to this every year. Plastic waste is very much high on most industries and peoples agenda and this is no more acute than in the construction industry. So making a change is very important, but it has to be done collectively and if we all do something then we will make a difference and help make the planet a better place for future generations.
