How Can I Decorate a Summer House?

March 10, 2022

With the warmer weather hopefully on its way, you might be thinking about turning a shed or outbuilding into a fully functional summer house. This could allow you and your family to spend those long, sunny days and evenings outside of the home, but still on your property. You may even be able to decorate and furnish it in a way that makes it an inviting place to be. However, before doing so, you might want to come up with a plan that everyone in your household agrees upon.

Many summer houses are built with wood, giving a bit of a cabin feel. Rather than trying to change its appearance, you could instead choose to build on it. One of the ways of doing this can be to order a rustic wooden photo print to display on the walls. This could have your family photo on, or even some text or another design. By putting up artwork in your summer house, so long as it has been properly waterproofed, you may be able to make it feel more like an extension of your own home. There shouldn’t be any knots visible, meaning your image won’t be tarnished. You may also be able to choose whether the slats of the print are displayed horizontally or vertically, allowing you to align them more with the slats that make up the house itself.

Having some furniture within a summer house can also help to make it feel like a relaxing space. You could choose to use a normal, household sofa, however, this may not be able to hold up should there be any leaks. Alternatively, you might want to choose between comfortable wicker or rattan garden furniture. These may have been specially treated to withstand the elements, meaning they could also potentially be moved out into the garden to use outside as and when required. Many of these may also come with cushions. If not, you might want to consider the colour scheme, if any, that exists in your summer house and create or outsource cushions to match.

To really spruce up your summer house, especially if it is fairly spacious, you might also want to consider building and installing your very own bar. Not only could this save you money on needing to go out for drinks, but it can also be a great statement piece for when you have guests around.

Combined with some good music, this could be a wonderful way to spend those summer evenings. You may want to take your time with this, to ensure that pieces are fixed together correctly. A spirit level may also be required to ensure that the surface is completely flat, to help avoid spillage or items dropping.

Creating your own summer house can even help you to better enjoy a staycation this year. By considering the opinions and interests of each member of your household, you might be able to decorate your summer house so that it caters to everyone’s individual personalities.
