How Our Family Life Revolves Around The Dining Table

When I was growing up mealtimes were never very organised. This was due to a number of factors. I grew up in a single parent household and consequently this meant that mum was always working more than one job to make ends meet. As such, when I was younger, I was looked after a lot of the time by my grandmother.

This meant meals that my mum had prepared were served up to me and I would generally have my meal watching the television. As I approached my teenage years it became common place for my mum to prepare a meal for me before she went to work and of course that would mean I would eat on my own in front of the television.

I never had a problem with this because I always appreciated that she needed to work to pay the bills. You would think that this left a negative impact on myself in regards to mealtimes but in fact it left a very positive impact upon me because I decided at a very early age that when I had my own family I would always do my best to sit down as a family together at mealtimes.

I now have a family of my own and there is no doubt that my wife, myself and our ten year old twin girls lives when we are home revolves around our dining table. It not only is used at all mealtimes but we also use it for lots of activities.

Mealtimes are very important to us as a family. It’s where we sit down at least once a day to enjoy our lunch or dinner together as a family. We talk about how our day has gone and our twin girls in particular love to tell us all about their school day and what they have done, what they have learnt and who they played with at break time. In particular when we are all sat at the dining table having dinner together it is also a great opportunity for the girls to tell us if they are having any problems and if anything is bothering them.

Of course it’s very important that you have a dining table that suits you as a family and suits the decor in your home. As I said earlier we also use our dining room for many other activities. Here are a couple of those activities that we always do as a family at our table dining.

We are big fans of lego and the dining table is the perfect place to make our latest lego build. It’s comfortable and you can spread all the lego parts out with the instructions to build the latest lego kit, which normally is something from Star Wars.

Our girls love to be creative so we are quite often getting the paints out and will paint our latest masterpieces and quite often mum and dad do some painting too. You never know, one of those masterpieces created at our first dining table could be as famous as the Mona Lisa, haha! Well, I can always dream!

At Christmas time, we create personalised Christmas cards as a family together for the special people in our lives.

As you can see our dining table is not only used at mealtimes, it is used for a multitude of activities and our lives are definitely centred around the dining table when we are at home.
